  • I'll answer-
Yes, both the Lewis and UW-Platteville games were at the Civic Center last year due to the unavailability of the Fieldhouse.

But, the Lewis game was not part of the season ticket package, and the attendance was 2, 585. That is not even enough to cover the cost of renting the Carver arena, and employing the game-day staff.

So the decision was made to play only 1 exhibition game, and it makes sense to me. I don't understand why there is second-guessing of everything that the Athletic Department does, even with scheduling. I think they do a pretty good job.

just like the "job" of some reporters has been claimed to be "stirring the pot", I guess the "job"
of message board posters is to "second-guess everything that the Athletic Department does".

      • closed door scrimmages happen more and more each year. Truthfully, it probably DOES do a TON more for the team than an exhibition against some team that gives them less of a challenge then just practicing against each other. It does suck as fans, cause it's one less game to see...but for the team it's gotta be pretty good.

You have to realize that at these closed door scrimmages they actually go for about 3-4 hours total with a break in the middle. There are real refs at these scrimmages, but the coaches can also cut in and give instruction during the scrimmage while the plays are still fresh in everyones minds.

If the scrimmage is against a good oponnent, then it does more to help prepare the team than some scrimmage against a crappy D2 team. Wichita St started this last year, and while it did suck to lose a game to watch (even if it doesn't count) I can see the argument where the scrimmage against better competition can help the TEAM alot more.

It also gives coaches a much better look on how their team would do out of the gate against decent competition. Sometimes it's hard to see weaknesses when you are playing cupcake Div 2 teams just so you can be in front of fans.

          • Let's forget about the quote from Les! We start the season with some pretty good competition and I like the idea of scrimmaging against a D-I school regardless of who it is to get us playing the best we can right away.

Good job JL for getting that scheduled.

Now on the rest of our schedule. After BYU and Vegas it looks real average, especially our home schedule. I'm going to hate to see next year's schedule because some AD's are working on theirs right now. The lack of AD will come and harm us later on. JL does not have the time to work the phones and consistently call those top 50 programs. That's the AD's job to develop those relationships.

Exactly. I still don't see anything wrong with what JL said and I'm really not quite sure what the big deal is with those three sentences.

Oh Ya, play the $ card, I thought you would go there DC You mean to tell me BU went into this 2 years of construction not knowing they may have to break even or take a hit on the exhibition games. To bad in all the years BU profited from the exhibition games at the field house that they might have to give back a little to the fans. I'm sure BU wouldn't bellie up from what little lost that would occure After all it's the royal fans that help build and support BU programs and helping pay for the new facilities

                • For the record I have NO problem with scrimmage games; I, too, think they are more beneficial than D2 exhibition games. And I certainly didn't intend to start a "war of words" with the good Bradleyfan posters here by criticizing Les for "pandering". I just get so sick and tired of BU and the MVC having to play second fiddle to teams like DePaul, Providence, Rutgers just because they're from the big, bad, awsome, "#1 rated conference" Big (L)east.

Obviously, I interpretted Les' statement differently from others; I'm OK with that . I would have just preferred Les to not be so "deferential" toward DePaul and the Big East. Now, I'm done. Go "Webster" that word OoB

                      • I'm not so sure why everyone is so riled up. Shockerfan13 said it perfectly. This benefits the team more than any stupid D2 or D3 exhibition game could. This is competition against a D1 opponent (albeit DePaul but still) and could really help the team progress. And why is everyone making such a big deal about the "closed door" thing. It isn't like JL agreed to it being closed door because depaul was "ashamed" to be playing us and didn't want anyone on the "outside" to know the result. It's a standard NCAA RULE that a scrimmage like that is closed to the public..it's not like JL had to agree to that and jump through that hoop to get a scrimmage against depaul...that is a MUST when it comes to scrimmages. It has nothing to do with depaul "belittling" themselves to play us. Get over it...we are playing a D1 school in the preseason this is good news. It's not like the exhibition games are that exciting anyway. Either we kill them or everyone gets worked up because we lose to them haha.

                        This is good all around.

OOB you are getting a little out of control here! With the economy the way it is and I'm sure our overall endowment has taken a hit, a bit of prudence is not such a bad thing. Who really cares if they get to go to an exhibition game or not and make such a big deal. Our out of conference home schedule is another matter. There I can see you becoming bleeping mad.

It could be worse though! Besides, two of those games are simply because we have the opportunity to play a couple of potential top 25 teams in Vegas. Another one of the home games is the BB return game from last year. We have actually only scheduled two (with a possible third) home games. Both of those teams are better than all SIX home games that isu scheduled for themselves! So yes, it could definitely be much worse! Next thing you know, people will complain about Bradley playing on Sunday.

Out of control, I don't think so I said how I feel and gave my opinions. I have badgered no one I think the exhibition games are good things no matter who we play as long as they are not run aways. And even run aways you get to see the younger players and guys who will not see much action play. As for DePaul and all the hip over scrummaging a Div 1 team, I can name 10 teams in the MVC I know are better than them
You living in the land of hills and trolley cars and not being able to see exhibition games is understandable but us people in P Town hate losing any game that we can't see the Braves play Playing behind closed doors is nothing to DePaul because it is no different than any home game with their LOW FAN FOLLOWING

Take a look at Xavier's schedule and TV time this year. I think this is where all of us would like BU to be someday... I also noticed that Creighton is a potential matchup for them in the Old Spice Classic o 11/27.
