  • IU's Kelvin Sampson gets stern Reprimand

National Association of Basketball Coaches reprimands Sampson
over recruiting violations during his tenure at Oklahoma, becoming the very first person ever to be punished by the group!
Sampson's membership was placed on probation for three years. During that time, Sampson -- a former member of the group's board of directors -- is prohibited from serving in an official capacity with the organization, the NABC announced.

He also is ineligible for district and national Coach of the Year awards and will lose his Final Four ticket privileges.

I loved this quote from the newspaper article in the USA Today, "Reggie Minton, deputy executive director of the NABC and chair of the ethics committee, said the group does not think NCAA sanctions are sufficient."

A open slap at the NCAA for backing down to big-time coaches at big-time programs.

      Wow....WOW and double wow!!
Kelvin Sampson, in his own bio on the OU site, names ex-Air Force coach Reggie Minton as one of his good friends!!

And Kelvin Sampson has been the DARLING of the NABC for years! He is the single most nationally decorated coach
in the entire NABC, and the entire membership of the NABC virtually never speaks without
praising him and recommending him for top jobs.

HE was the NABC choice for National Coach of the Year in 2001-2002
He was also the NABC Coach of the Year in 1988-1989 and 1990-1991 when he was at Washington State!!
He was PRESIDENT of the NABC in 2003-2004, and IS presently on their BOARD of DIRECTORS!

and here's a quote from the HEAD of the NABC,
"I've known Kelvin for about 15 years, he served on our board of directors. He is a very talented guy, and his teams are very
well-prepared. His success speaks for itself, as he has been to the NCAA Tournament on a regular basis, and he has a great
background. He has everything to be successful at a place like Indiana." Jim Haney, Executive Director, National Association of
      Basketball Coaches (NABC)"

For the NABC to take this position and make Sampson the very FIRST head coach ever to be reprimanded
like this and placed on probation is really, really shocking!!
These are all of Kelvin's own lifelong, closest
      buddies who are doing this
      !!!
      UNBELIEVABLE!

Yup-- it's kinda like the Roman Catholic Church censuring the Pope, pretty striking.

There is another short article at the end of the blurb about Sampson in the Indiana papers.

It's about an IU football player, James Hardy, who's been cleared to play and will face no discipline.
He was found guilty of hitting his girlfriend and the couple's infant child.
The charges were "domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of a crime", and Hardy agreed to a pretrial settlement.
This is like what happened to Jabaar Battle at BU, except for the fact that Battle didn't hit an infant (something I would think is a far more serious aspect to the crime.)
But Battle was suspended a couple games and his playing time severely demoted thereafter. Seems he was basically on house arrest and wasn't heard from again.
This guy Hardy, is welcomed back onto the team with open arms, and will not serve one minute of suspension or ineligibility.
Now, tell me again what punishment Jamaal Tatum got??
