I always thought Peoria was the geographical center of the country or at least very close. When I was growing up I used to hear that major corporations always test marketed their products in Peoria first. I remember the saying was, "if it doesn't sell in Peoria - it won't sell anywhere else."

Edit: I was wrong, the center is in Kansas, should have looked it up first. But I do remember the statement "if it doesn't sell in Peoria - it won't sell anywhere else." But things have changed. When I was at Bradley our major course study one semester was GM which was considered the best corporation in the World....

Peoria was a test center for products due to it's demographic and size not with it's location.

The famous phrase ???Will it play in Peoria???? was coined during the vaudeville era when a successful show in Peoria??”recognized as a city that typified mainstream America??”would mean success everywhere.
