  • Staff Changes?

Heard from several very reliable sources in the AAU community that Coach Merfeld may be leaving the Braves. Would be a HUGE loss to the staff!! Can't trade the experience on the sidelines and on the recruiting trail!! Would hate to see it happen...

Coach Merfeld has been a D1 head coach and has had success, at Hampton. I have heard there has been some interest in him. I would expect that he would like to be a head coach again.

As I am sure you know, Coach, Hampton currently has an interim head coach, Edward Joyner, who was promoted a couple months ago to temporarily replace their former coach, who resigned. However, I can't find any report that they are currently searching for another coach. It seems they are happy for Joyner to remain interim coach for next year.
From PJ Star sports expert Kirk Wessler in his Jan. 10, 2012 column following 8th loss in a row at Drake-
"Yes, the Braves are better than they were when the season started two months ago. By a light year or two, they??™re better."

And from the PJ Star 4/26/12, Dave Reynolds-
"Fields and Grier both appear to be difference makers. If Bradley continues to add the right players around them, happy days may be ahead for the Braves after a long dry spell."

Merfeld leaving would be a huge loss. Without Merfeld on the bench, I think we go back to having one of the weakest staffs in the league.

You guys know more about Merf than I do so I can't really say if it would be good or bad. But what I do hope for, if he leaves, is that we hire a big assistant coach who has experience playing the 3-5 positions - someone the size of say Mitchell Anderson. I know we can't get Phil Jackson, but there must be someone out there that can help JL teach our bigs.

Biff....don't think DC was implying that Hampton was looking at Merf. or ANY coach.... He was just stating he, Merf, HAD success there at one time.

this stuff may or may not be true, but it is rumorish...and let's not get carried away with it...
I saw Coach Merfeld at the Bradley team camp this weekend....so there's definitely nothing solid at this time.

Coaches come and go and there is nothing better then one leaving for a head coaching position regardless. I'd expect Coach Merf to take in some inquiries and explore them.
