  • NCAA Waiver for Immediate Eligibility

Here's an example of a kid who is being granted a waiver by the NCAA so he can become immediately eligible after transferring.
I guess the NCAA only does this in rare cases, but they have deemed this kid deserving....while numerous others who transfer, always have to sit out a year.

The kid's name is Travis Busch...and to give you an idea of when he graduated, this is the kid who beat out Ray Brown for Mr. Basketball in Minnesota in their senior years...in 2005.
He went to Cal Poly, then transferred back to Minnesota. This spring he decided to transfer to Colorado State for his 5th and final year of college (and 4th year of eligibility).
But for some reason the NCAA granted the kid immediate eligibility so he can play right away.

I thought that for graduate school you can transfer/be excepted and play immediately for another school.

you are referring to the rule that was in effect for a short while then rescinded...
now the NCAA only grants such a waiver on a case by case basis...

it is the same rule Duke's Greg Paulus is using to transfer and play football at Syracuse, but he still is NOT guaranteed that extra year automatically, he has to request it...and in his case it very different as he wants to play a different sport.

Syracuse, NY -- The NCAA responded today to a query from colleague Donna Ditota on the eligibility status of former CBA quarterback Greg Paulus, who is investigating playing football this fall after four years of playing point guard for the...

"If a student-athlete wants to transfer and immediately compete as a
graduate student, the college or university they are transferring to would
need to seek a waiver, because in most cases they would have to sit out a
year before competing under NCAA transfer rules and would not have any
remaining eligibility. One of the factors our members have determined is
appropriate for a graduate student waiver is if the transfer is academically
      motivated."

Bu is Travis Busch's transfer academically motivated?? Or is it because he lost his scholarship at Minnesota and thus it's economically motivated?
