  • Bad News for Charles Barkley

Last week, Charles Barkley said for the umpteenth time that he just might make a run for Governor in the state of Alabama in 2010.
The press has covered this and are waiting for Charles to make his final decision.
It would be a great story, along the lines of Jesse Ventura winning in Minnesota,
and there are some political pundits who actually think he could win!

But one journalist was among the few who actually did some homework and found that the Constitution of the
State of Alabama requires all gubernatorial candidates to be legal residents of the state for a minimum of seven years.

Charles only purchased an Alabama house a couple years ago, and still doesn't list Alabama as his official legal address.
So even if he moved there today, the earliest they will have a gubernatorial election that Charles can be eligible to run in would be 2014.
    Sorry Charlie...

Barkley has publicly acknowledged this and stated if he ran that it would be in 2014.

        That is in error.
The news has been filled with several reports quoting Charles as saying he wants to run in 2010.

The local Birmingham news also reported 2014 as the year he would be eligible. Not sure why he would choose a football state to run in. Nobody but us darned yankees care about basketball down here. Now, of course, when Shaun Alexander retires, he could win in a landslide.
