Need Congress even get involved in this issue?

Are they also going to set an age limit for who I hire to mow my grass?
How about setting a weight limit on those that are hired as checkout girls at Wal-Mart??

Do they not have like some terrorist and economy issues that are more pressing, or maybe another hearing on baseball and whether Manny Ramirez is using fertility drugs?

Just as over regulation is a bad thing, the events of the past year clearly show that a lack of regulation is equally bad. I agree with the congressman and also think that it is time that the NBA stop using the colleges as a minor league.

If we think congress should be involved in investigating the BCS and NCAA, then this is fair game.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports weighs in.

A U.S. Congressman wants answers from the NBA about a rule that keeps younger players out of the league.

I think maybe the congressman could find some other issues to focus on at the moment. I am not impressed by his ability to prioritize.

Is this representative from Tennessee solely responsible for fixing the economy, pulling troops from Iraq, and fighting the war on terror? I doubt the congressman spent much, if any, time on this himself. The letter was likely written by one of his aides, and reviewed and signed by him. Most of his time is spent serving on various committees and sub-committees.

Also, a big part of a congressman's job is to respond to issues brought to them by their constituents. This congressman is from Memphis, got his law degree from the University of Memphis, and represents the 9th district in Tennessee, which includes...you guessed it...Memphis. If his alma mater, which is the largest university in his largest voting base, is at the center of an issue that may be a result of a broken or exploitative system, he is serving his constituents (i.e. doing his job) by addressing it.

I think it's more irritating when the person who is responsible for fixing our country's problems is going on the Tonight Show, 60 Minutes, or on ESPN filling out an NCAA bracket, as opposed to a congressman serving his district by writing a letter addressing a problem that directly affects his constituency. But I digress...

Here's Congressman Cohen's website if you'd like to tell him how he should prioritize.

I doubt an aide wrote this:

"I was watching the [Memphis] Redbirds play ... and I was looking at the field and there wasn't an African-American player on the field when the Iowa Cubs played the Redbirds [in a Triple-A baseball game]. I didn't see one on either team, and I thought, 'This is a white sport. And tennis is a white sport. And golf is a white sport. And swimming is a white sport. And hockey is a white sport. And they don't have these restrictions. But basketball and football are predominantly African-American sports, and that's where they have the rule that forces players into college [instead of] going straight to the pros. Something here doesn't compute."

And so all this proves it is a racial issue? That's a stretch.

That's what I thought too. I agree with the congressman that there shouldn't be an age limit, but not with his reasoning. You'd think the NBA could use the D league for these kids straight out of high school.

looks more to me like he's the lead dog in a thinly veiled effort to try to deflect attention and blame away from his beloved alma mater.

Maybe he should support legislation imposing legal penalties on D-I schools who cheat and coddle thugs, bar fighters, and druggies.

Now it is quite clear what the guy's motivation really is, the guy is just being self-serving by trying to push the blame onto the NBA or anyone else.
he can hardly be held as an unbiased, objective voice in this.

                          Age Limits

We do not need government regulation or involvement in athletics or athletic organizations, unless existing law is being broken. This is not their proper role. This also includes the BCS and NCAA however much we may dislike what they do or do not do!
As for the NBA, they are clearly wrong---Age should not be an issue.

I think Congress is questioning the BCS under existing law, or at least, they are saying that. They're scrutinizing whether the BCS is operating as an unfair monopoly, right?

As far as the NBA and the age limit is concerned, could someone argue age discrimination? Age is one of the protected classes, I think. Though I'm curious as to how sports leagues are legally able to avoid the gender issue. Maybe there's a loop-hole and it's just generally accepted.

What did you expect? I'm sure the NBA sat down and said "lets do something to hurt minorities." Getting old.
