then why do we see story after story that say indeed coaches and others in the NCAA DO read, pay attention to, and are concerned by what's said on the message boards...
if guys like Bruce Weber, Bill Self, etc...say openly that they read the boards and are concerned about what's being written on them...then I would prefer to believe them rather than believe a message board poster's claim that they don't care.

also...you need to pick better friends.....
but your comment is like saying....
"I know only one person who writes about college basketball for a newspaper, therefore what newspaper writers write isn't relevant and nobody in college basketball cares"!

it is simply false...the stuff on message boards and blogs is the new media and it not only reflects what's going on, it sometimes DRIVES what's going on...

    One piece of proof---
TWO DIFFERENT people who work or worked in the athletic department at a nearby university have called me on the phone to say they appreciate what's on THIS precise board and they appreciate the positive statements, the support, and the fact that it helps boost the support well beyond the message board itself!

So, I have to believe the evidence I am seeing is that there is more attention paid to fans on message boards than many think..

No need to pick better friends tornado. Mine are fine thanks. Best a guy could have actually.

We are going to have to agree to disagree on this. Both of us agree message boards are an important part of some fans experience. We disagree on how big a role they play in the grand scheme of things.

Like most things they are "cliqueish". My group of BU friends/followers don't post on the board and it appears yours do. Two ways to skin a cat I suppose.

Same goes for my favorite baseball team--St. Louis Cardinals. I'm sure there is a "message board" group out there. That's great. But it's a very small portion of the overall fan base.

Either way, there are a lot of different ways to be a fan. There isn't one right or wrong way. Agreed?

People are forgetting the difference between posting on a message board and READING the message board. For every person who posts, there's several who don't who will read that post.

So instead of 40-50 of 10000 as theorized earlier, I'd wager it's more like 300-400 that read, as an estimate.

Probably true Asian. I used the 40-50 number but 300-400 is probably closer to the number who "read" on a consistent basis. 4% of a fan base is still a very small number in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, I post/read message boards but I don't think so highly of myself that I'm delusional and thinking I have any power. I don't.

There may be more people who visit message boards than some realize.
From the statistics provided by our webserver:
Bradleyfans.com averages 1500-2000 unique visitors daily (unique IP addresses). We average 6,000 to 8,000 total visits per day for an average of about 4 visits daily per unique user.
And some people don't visit every day. The monthly average ranges from 10,000 to 15,000 unique visitors per month. They are not all Bradley fans, but I do believe a majority of hard-core Bradley fans do know about the site and visit at least occasionally.

I have conversations at the BU games with a whole of of the fans who are NOT regular posters on BradleyFans, and many have never even signed up...
BUT-- every single one (and I stress EVERY ONE) of the people I see regularly at Bradley games, events, and road trips, the people who are the core 5,000
or more BEST and tightest fans....
ALL know of BradleyFans and have visited it plenty...and freely admit to doing so. They are the invisible masses of BU fans who can't be perceived if you think
that the only people here who care are the frequent posters.

So I believe, as is likely quite true at other schools, the message boards are
the gathering place, the "water cooler" or the "teachers' lounge" of college
basketball...and thus the message boards are way more indicative of and
influential on a given team's fanbase than you can easily prove or
              demonstrate
              .

I have also been told this by people in the inner circles at the schools' athletic departments themselves
