we sampled 3 different pizzas from Firehouse Pizza last week (cheese, sausage, pepperoni) and I was wondering what others thought....
I have heard people say they really like Firehouse, but I thought there was ONE feature that really stood out and prevented me from enjoying it..
the sauce must have a LOT of sugar added, because it was so candy-like sweet that it dominated the taste and nullified the really nice flavor of the cheese & pepperoni...
I'd have to rate it only a 2 out of 10
How do others feel about Firehouse
Also I have had several of the extremely thin crust pizzas offered as appetizers at Granite City....and I absolutely love them.....
they are among the best pizzas I have had........rated 9.5 out of 10!
(plus is a convenient place to go after Bradley games, right across the river, and several of the players and their families & other fans often show up after BU games)
any other new places or other comments??
The sauce is what makes Firehouse pizza unique. I think the Peoria Firehouse (in Northpoint shopping center) is better than the others in EP and Wash.
I also like the pizzas at Granite City, but IMO they are more of an appetizer than a main course.

I REALLY like Firehouse. Yes - it's a sweet sauce, but I like it.
I feel there are 2 things that really separate pizzas - the sauce and the crust.
That said - I also like Firehouse's crust.
T - if you didn't like their sauce, try their margarita pizza (it doesn't have sauce on it, it has an olive oil I think along with cheese and tomatoes).
I have tried both Firehouse pizza with the sweet sauce and with regular. Agree that the sweet one takes away from the flavor of the other ingredients. The regular or unsweetened pizza is very good however.
Some see a hopeless end, while others see an endless hope.
I tried out a new pizza restaurant- and the pizza was fantastic. It's a little out of the way, so most people would not know about it unless someone referred them there.
Brick Oven Pizza in East Peoria, on Meadows Avenue.
they are only open on Wednesday through Saturday, since the owner is a college student who takes classes at ICC on Mondays and Tuesdays.
He has built a huge brick oven and bakes the pizzas to order. Check it out!
Story about teenage owner (he's not a teen anymore, but was when this article appeared).

well I all I did was call in an order and pick it up....
don't you think they should have mentioned that they have two different sauces and that I should be aware some people don't like the really sweet choice??
I guess live and learn...but by not bothering to tell me, and by simply giving me by default the brand of sauce that obviously a lot of people don't like...they have left me with a pretty bad taste for more of their pizza..I doubt I will ever go back when there are so many tremendous, familiar choices as alternatives...
why would I want to take another chance with their pizza when I was pretty badly disappointed the first time we ordered.......
I guess Firehouse Pizza should have put this in larger font on their front page:
NOW offering a new choice of sauce.
This is a TRADITIONAL SAUCE is made with
whole ground tomatos and our secret blend of spices,
not as sweet as our original but just as good.
Just ask for the chunky traditional sauce,
if not stated you will always get our orginal.

I like their deep dish pizza. It's different. I wish Three Fat Guys Pizza would return.

Monical's is hands down the best pizza around. I have not tried Firehouse Pizza so I really can't comment on that, but I really can't think of anything better in Central Illinois than a Monical's Pizza with hot peppers and sausage dipped in their french dressing. I may take the wife and kids there tonight. Thanks for the idea T!

Sorry you didn't like it T...but now there's one less person in line when I order from there next time!
The places all mentioned do different things well/better than the others.
Double A's has the best toppings/freshest ingredients. And it doesn't hurt that they load it on.
My favorite pizzas in town (in no particular order) are:
Double A's "mega meat"
Agatucci's pepperoni
Old Chicago "Thai pie" or Italian sausage w/ green olives (they use whole olives)
Papa Murphy's "cowboy"
Papa John's BBQ chicken
I like Hoops pizza, but it's always so dirty there I really only eat it if carried out.

Pepperoni, now I understand what is wrong with you, Agatuccis sausage the best but I do like Double A"s as they are a short 10 minutes to carryout from after a long day.
I know this is ancient history for most guys on this board, but the Flamingo was one of the first places I had pizza. They were located across from the old Peoria police station on Adams. Olivers was originally using a recipe from the Flamingo and might still be doing so. Was so long ago that I don't remember what the Flamingo pizza tasted like, but it was great. Now when I'm in town I go to Olivers once a week, and their pizza is hard to beat.
