When was the last time a guard chose to redshirt? It doesn't seem to happen much.

The two incoming freshmen guards will probably get some minutes because of injury. BU has had guys lose time due to getting a players hand caught in the opposition's jersey and running into the scorer's table in the last two years. It's nice that guys like Maniscalco play through pain, but it would be better to be able to bring a healthy body that can produce at a high level.

But I think of him as a PG first and I'm not alone in that assessment, because that's the game he'll bring to this team that runs a system where guys with combo tendencies succeed.
Ummm how about SM? I'd say he is a point guard. I have not seen DSE play so no comment from me on if he can or should.

Bradley only has minutes for 5 guards (Assuming CR is not used at the 4). 6 guards could get minutes if someone gets hurt. A lot of bad things would have to happen to necessitate 7 guards. Personally I hope someone redshirts. I'm sure JL will do what is best for the players and the team.

He can play point, sure. But even though he played significant minutes at point as a frosh, he is a natural two--especially because we rely on his shot. I've thought that since day 1.

I would wager that Edge is our only true point- Smmy is actually more of a 2- although he is much more of a standstill shooter- DSE is a combo guy- who can handle the ball- but would probably be more comfortable as a 2- who could take it to the rim, drive or shhot 15-18 footers comfortably...

He also is a very good passer and a good rebounder for 6'2
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

Soutpaw I agree. SM shoots best when he does not have to be the play maker and create his own shot off the dribble. Although he does love going in there and flipping up those layups. SM is our 2nd point guard and will probably log in most of his minutes at the 2.

I've always felt the exact opposite about SM. He's a natural leader, QB, point. I'm not saying he's our best PG, but I think he's more of a PG than a shooting guard.

Let's compromise and call him a combo guard

Fair enough. I've always considered Maniscalco a combo guard. I just don't think we need to play him at point. His point guard abilities make him a tough guy to address defensively as a 2.

And SFP, that's why I am postulating that if DSE redshirts, he likely is the 4th option at point from day 1 behind McCain, Maniscalco, and (assuming Tyler Les wears the Bradley red) Les.

I am strongly against redshirting either one. We have had a history of sudden injuries and other situations where players were not able to play for one reason or another. If we can get them even a few minutes per game and avoid the "DNP-CD" statline then that is better than nothing. Both will have ample opportunity for significant playing time next year once DD and CR move on.

I also am against it because of my experience at Iowa in 2001-2002. Coach Alford thought the team was too deep in many respects because we had 13 scholarship players, Luke Recker who was paying his own way and played well enough to garner 35+ mins/game, and another walk-on who deserved significant time.

Therefore, Alford redshirted the following players

Cortney Scott- 6'6 PF had a very promising freshman year but coach thought he would save a year of eligibility rather than play behind 5-6 others. Scott transferred by mid-season to Oakland University where he became their best player for 2 years, and led them to 1 more tournament appearance than Iowa had in the next 3 years.

Erek Hansen- 6'11 C failed out of school...he said he lost his motivation while not playing. He eventually re-enrolled after 2 years in JC and could have been an amazing player if Iowa would have had him for 4 full years.

Marcellus Sommerville- 6'7 SF we all know about this one...I am confident that if he hadn't let Alford redshirt him, he wouldn't have ever left. For Bradley's sake, thank God he did!

The memory of all these players leaving makes me believe that it is best to leave the concept of a voluntary reshirt with football.

DSE, will NOT be behind Tyler Les.

Yeah, no kidding. I would certainly hope that never winds up being the case. I would say that we would have seriously overestimated DSE's abilities if he ended up falling behind Tyler on BU's depth chart.

I imagine people were saying the same thing about Jim Les "back in the day".

                          1) If Tyler Les is anything like his dad and Tom Les then he will be an over-achiever.
                          2) Since TL is NOT EVEN AT BU (and may not be) then I don't think it's even a worthy discussion.

Do you think they both could play at the same time? Not a bad back court for the way future. Let's say in 2-3 years.
