  • Hostile and Abusive Nicknames Revisited

In its never ending quest to be inconsistent, the NCAA has ambiguously ruled on the nickname of the
UNIVERSITY of NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX.

The NCAA has asked the UND people to change their name, and yet the same NCAA that has hammered schools like Bradley with demands for change has seemingly never been bothered by other BCS schools with Native American connotations in their nicknames like Illini, Hawkeye, and Red Storm.
Other nicknames that usurp the names and imagery of various other subgroups of people like "Cowboys", "Irish", "Boilermakers", "Trojans", "Warriors", etc...have never seemingly bothered the NCAA as they focus only on one tiny subgroup of people (the Native American) to get all riled up over.
Even then, their ruling is ambiguous.....they give the North Dakota People a 2 1/2 year reprieve for no reason at all!!

In a recent development, the NCAA appears to be justifying allowing the school to at least for now - use the Native American nickname (Fighting Sioux), simply because
"The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe voted Tuesday to approve the University of North Dakota’s current nickname"

however, elsewhere it is simultaneously noted that
"Another tribal group, the Standing Rock Sioux, has not given its permission to use the name."
    thus......
"If the university is unable to obtain approval from both tribes, the NCAA agreed
to give the university until August 15, 2011, to adopt a new name and logo."

By the way....here is the single MOST PROMINENT line in all of the recent NCAA News releases on this subject...
"The NCAA believes that the time has come to retire Native American imagery in college sports."

but then tell me why they allow the "Seminoles", etc.......it's money plain and simple....it all centers on money.
If Bradley or North Dakota would come up with the big time cash and pay off the NCAA and the tribes,

and if you still don't think money is the single thing that drive every NCAA action...then I dare you to read this one...
Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

34 different (yes, 34 different) bowl games have asked to be certified by the NCAA and they approved them all!
if you come up with the $$ you could probably get approval for a Doggie Bowl or a Toilet Bowl....

Let me tell you, from someone who is from a very Irish family. We will NEVER be offended by Notre Dame. It's kind of a household school we all cheer for.

    Also:

"Another tribal group, the Standing Rock Sioux, has not received enough money to give its permission to use the name."

    Is how it works.

it is tragic that now the term "Native American tribes" is so MUCH more strongly associated with GAMBLING
than it is with competitive sports...but it follows the pattern.....$$$$$$$$$$$

Like it or not, the Seminole tribe has given FSU the go ahead to use that nickname. Therefore, they get to use it.

Us, with a generic nickname (Braves), means we can't ask any particular tribe for permission.

North Dakota appears to have asked for permission, and appear to have been denied.

These guys did go after the U of I, remember, to the point that Chief Illiniwek is gone. So it's not about the money on this one (or at least there's plenty of evidence that shows they're being consistent with their guidelines). Now, of course, I don't agree with those guidelines.

but if the use of such names is "hostile and abusive" and EVEN if
"..the time has come to retire Native American imagery in college sports."
then it shouldn't be allowed even if the Seminole Tribe agrees to allow it...

it would be like allowing suicide or spousal abuse just because the person fails to complain about it or want enforcement involved....

it shows immense hypocrisy to outlaw it here and there, but allow it where the payoff silences the Seminoles.
Personally I find the Minnesota Twins hostile and abusive...

Yeah, unless the Seminole tribe are actively trying to convince the NCAA to use their name for the FSU program. It does smell fishy. I'm just having trouble figuring out the NCAA's motivation, considering another big BCS school (Illinois) has been hammered by this very thing.
