Former Louisville forward picks Creighton
BY STEVEN PIVOVAR
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER
A 6-foot-8 forward ranked 106th by one recruiting service as a high school senior will transfer to play at Creighton.
Chad Millard played his freshman season at Louisville but was granted his release in late June. He visited Creighton last week, his mother Joni said Monday night, and has decided to become a Bluejay.
"He loved it there," she said. "He said it felt like a perfect fit."
Creighton had one advantage in that Millard has several family members living in Nebraska.
His mother was born in Gering and graduated from the University of Nebraska. His father, Doug, is from Mason City, Iowa. One of Joni Millard's brothers, Jim, lives in Omaha and another, Kim, lives in Lincoln.
Millard (pronounced MILL-erd) will have to sit out this season but will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Because of NCAA rules, Creighton's coaches cannot comment on Millard until he enrolls in school later this month. Millard was traveling to Chicago Monday night and unavailable for comment.
Millard grew up in Goffstown, N.H., a city of about 15,000 located just west of Manchester, New Hampshire's capital. He played his senior season at Brewster Academy, where he averaged 16 points and seven rebounds.
He was ranked 106th on Rivals.com's Top 150 high school prospects in 2005. Scouts.com regarded him as a three-star prospect. Millard selected Louisville over Providence, Iowa State, North Carolina State and Vanderbilt.
Millard played 32 games at Louisville last season and averaged 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds. He battled a series of injuries, including a broken jaw.
"He had a lot of bad luck with injuries and we hope that's behind him," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said in a statement when it was announced that Millard had been granted his release. "I hope he's successful wherever he chooses to go to school."
Millard also considered Northeastern and Vanderbilt after deciding to leave Louisville.
