  • Illini Assistant & Jamar Smith Taking China trip

Wayne McClain will head a team of touring collegians that play in China.

Texas-Pan American head coach Tom Schuberth has stepped down from coaching the team this season,
the "Sports Reach Basketball Team trip to China this August"
and Wyane McClain will coach the team.
One of the Texas Pan American players, Colin Lien, is going, as is (reportedly) Jamar Smith.

    This is GREAT news.

Though I doubt there are many talented Chinese teams, McClain will EASILY coach these kids to EASY victories. Nice resume booster for WM - should be able to lock up a DivI head coaching job soon.

The article says they are leaving TODAY for their trip to China.
I am quite surprised there is no official news release other than the one from the Texas Pan American player.

By the way, the UTPA player, Colin Lien, writes a diary for the UTPA/CSTV web site, so maybe we can catch some info there:
CBS Sports features live scoring, news, stats, and player info for NFL football, MLB baseball, NBA basketball, NHL hockey, college basketball and football.

Is this all being kept hush-hush?
There is no mention of it anywhere on the Illinois official site, nor on the illiniboard.
In fact, it appears they are already on thier way to China and the news just isn't anywhere.

I found a little update on Jamar's trip to China.
They have already played their first game, and won 92-86 over an Australian team.
Wayne McClain is coaching the group but certainly not getting much recognition or publicity out of it.
The only word on what's going on is a player diary posted by the kid, Colin Lien, from Texas- Pan American on their web site.
One mention was that they went to a restaurant, the entire team ate until they could hardly move and the total bill was $18!! Wow!
One other funny thing the kid said was that the law in China regarding pedestrians is that all cars have to stop when you begin to cross the street. BUT- if the pedestrian makes eye contact with the driver then the full burden is on the pedestrian instead and the driver is absolved of any responsibility.
What that leads to is all the pedestrians NEVER look at traffic!

The 2nd game on this foreign tour for Jamar and Wayne McClain was a laugher.
They beat a touring team from, the Melbourne (Australia) Tigers 90-52, but I cannot find any word on scoring totals.
I'd have to think the Illini players (Jamar Smith and Chester Frazier) will be getting some playing time as their coach is Wayne McClain.

Any more updates on the China trips?
I never even heard how they did, and there was virtually nothing anywhere even on the illiniboard.
What was on the illiniboard those posters there got direct from the BradleyFans board and even linked to this site.
