  • Jerry Wainwright done at DePaul?

Despite the fact the DePaul AD Jeanne Ponsetto has announced publically that Jerry Wainwright's job is safe, and there were no plans to fire him, I have heard some rumors that are quite different.
This may take a while to happen, and there is still a chance it might not happen, but here are the rumors that are leaking out--

Jerry Wainwright has reportedly 3 years left on a contract extension, and DePaul is reluctant to pay the entire contract amount to buy him out. They don't want to spend the cash to pay the entire contract amount. So they are trying to force Wainwright to leave.
DePaul has offered what they think is a fair settlement to buy Wainwright out of the remaining years, but Wainwright will not accept anything less than a full buyout. So since Wainwright has a number of years left on his contract, DePaul has decided to fire everyone else on his staff that can be fired, since they are all on 1-year contracts. They hoped this would force Jerry to settle and take the buyout offer.
So assistant Scott Wainwright has already been fired, and the other assistants have supposedly been told to head off to the Final Four and look for other employment. DePaul hopes that with no assistants, Wainwright will finally take their offer and leave. Sounds bizarre, but it comes from a source that is believeable.

Wow! I've never heard of something this strange before. But no shock that they are trying to get rid of him.

Sounds like a lot of negotiating going on here... so what if Wainwright sticks to his guns even after the firings??? He theoretically could go out and recruit anyone who wants to play division 1 basketball...do a half ***
job with sub par talent even though he is currently doing a sub par job....and hold the school hostage...

But what purpose would that serve? When Wainwright is fired/forced out, which he will be, if not now, by the end of next year, he's going to want a new job. Pulling a stunt like that wouldn't land him a job anywhere, regardless of the circumstances.

Da Coach were you listening to the Score this afternoon? The above is verbatim from what Dan Bernstein reported this afternoon.

His record at DePaul and only that would be what keeps him from landing a job. The other areas of negotiation is his right and most employers understand what he is doing. 4-5 years is a lot of time and money! I'd fight for that pay day also if I was him.

I agree that if Wainwright took that approach his prospects for a future head coaching job would be limited at best.

But the real thing to me is Depaul. What name coach would say you know that seems like a good school to coach at, I mean they want to low ball the current coach on any buyout on a contract. Instead of working with the head coach on a better buy out they essentially play like a child and take away his assistants. Tieing his hands either way if he stays they pick his new assistants or he takes less money then what his contract offers.

This is horrible by Depaul and I for one hope this childish act by the Depaul administration haunts them for many years to come.

I think Wainwright is way way in over his head in that league but I hope he screws Depaul and stays out his entire contract.

As much as I would love to see Wainwright gone, this stunt DePaul is pulling is completely bush league. I hope he sticks it to them, then maybe the administration will see that perhaps the problem is bigger than just the basketball coach and the AD will join Jerry in the unemployment line. You gave the man a contract, honor it, don't try to weasel your way out of it. When you decided to play with the big boys, it means you have to act like a big boy.

I got this by email from a source at DePaul. I was at work and I didn't hear what was said on the radio- where did they say their information came from?

Come on DePaul. Honor the contract and hire someone else. Private school is charging and making a fortune. DePaul should be ashamed of themselves.

If you want to compete with Big East teams, you need to spend like a Big East team. If DePaul isn't careful, they'll find themselves in the Horizon League pretty darn fast.

The bright side: they'll be able to play all their games in their 5,000 seat, on-campus arena.

Chris Lowery is the name that's getting associated with DePaul right now. Some have mentioned Dave Leiato, but most don't think that either party would be interested.
