I remember when coaching salaries started to get over $200,000 per year just about a decade ago, and people started to criticize that the basketball coach was the highest paid person at the universities, earning more than any professor, and even more than the university presidents.
In many states, the head coache at the state university was becoming the highest paid public official in the state, even more than the governor. Now we are seeing some salaries up 10x and more.

$40 Million dollars? I hate to sound like a Liberal, but that sure could provide a lot of education to the disadvantaged kids in the Eastern Kentucky Appalachia area.
Just a microchosism in the mis-directed value system that exists today.
      UK should be ashamed.

I understand Grassman but what is the line between fair and when a school should be ashamed?

Heck, we could all survive on less and help disadvantaged people. I don't make a lot of money but I know I could survive on less. It shouldn't be on just the insanely rich to provide and make sacrifices.

There's no excuse whatsoever for the Valley not to regularly finish well ahead of CUSA in terms of RPI and number of postseason bids.

CUSA will be lucky to have more than two teams in the NCAA tournament and NIT combined!

I'm not a liberal either, but come on! That much money for a game where someone puts a ball through a hoop? Really!

I am pretty much a moderate, but seeing things like this happen makes me more liberal with each passing day!

They still have big budgets over in CUSA, so 2 is about the right number for NCAA/NIT combined bids. In fact, they'll maybe increase! It's much more likely a random straggler will win the conference tournament, sneaking in an extra postseason bid. UAB, Tulsa, Houston, and UTEP are good enough programs such that 1 or 2 of them should be able to fringe on at-large consideration every couple of years.

But the days of being a major player in basketball is over.

I'm guessing much of that salary comes from outside supporters, there's a lot of horse money in Lexington.

Good point Murph. I doubt much of this money is coming directly from the Commonwealth.

I can tell you for a fact most if not all that money is not coming from taxpayers.

Another fact is Calipari will single handedly bring in well over 40 million dollars in revenue for the University of Kentucky and thus the state.

If it bothers you so much then stop buying tickets to sporting events (and thus contributing to what you deem a problem of athletic salaries).

I do not know where the line is, but I do know Kentucky just obliterated it.

Well, I'm all for helping those guys out, especially as a guy who loves the state of KY. BUT, in America, nobody can tell you that you're making too much money, that's the beauty of our society. Do I think athlete salaries are "deserved"? No, but, nobody ever complains about how much athletes make, and as long as the fans are willing to pay the price to watch them play, why not? Besides, the athletic department at UK is a separate entity from the university, and as Jim Calhoun said, these athletic departments bring in profits for their schools. And let's face it....most of us go to college to have more opportunities professionally. Sure, I probably won't ever make 40 million dollars, but somebody could surely argue that a college graduate on average makes more than what's "necessary" to survive.

And, since everyone else is identifying, I'm a far right conservative .

This is the direction that big time college sports is heading. It will be only a matter of time before that college sports the way we know it will be changed and the brand that we love will forever be lost. There will be those that will say that change is good and the loudest will be those that have the most to gain financially (i.e. agents, AAU, certain networks).

BCS... just watch what ends up happening to UConn, slap on wrist... insert Indiana State for UConn and they would get no such thing as a wrist slap.

The NCAA is nothing but a huge bunch of hypocrites and is about absolutely one thing.. money. They have zero interest in education let alone anything to do with the student athletes.

The Whitlock article Tornado posted today is spot on. How long has the NCAA been investigating USC? Sampson was a train wreck at two BCS programs, both programs are respondsible for compliance and the understanding of rules and violations yet the NCAA essentially did nothing to either Oklahoma or Indiana. You think SEMO wouldnt have minded a little BCS love when they got punished?
