I too wish for more good news from the Hilltop .............there has not been much from what the team accomplished last season!

This is way too many negative occurences coming off of such a great season. I am not even counting the loss of Dominatrix Johnson or POB's declaring for the draft as negatives. If the kid gives up on BU because we're in the tournament and can't be there that day, that's his problem. If we have a player declare for the draft and go in the top 10, that's nothing but positive news on what BU can do for you (I could care less about POB's stepdad. POB's relationship with JL and the the university is solid). However, losing Roy Bright and Marcus Sikes were major blows to our prospects for the upcoming season. The NCAA's reprimand was embarrassing, as was the suspension of Ray Brown. The committments of Fears and Williams are solid, but the fruits are still a year away. It's just frustrating to me that after one of the best rides we've had in a long, long time, there is so much negative news surrounding the program.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with this statement. This is what happens when you're a major program, constantly under the spotlight, constantly scrutinzed. Another poster on another board pointed it out to me, and I think I agree. It comes with the territory. Now, we just have to continue to be a winning program so that the magnifying glass highlights our successes as well as it has our faults and shortcomings.

Readers of Reynolds' column would think BU has had a flood of bad things in the past 3 months since their Sweet Sixteen run.

The Ray Brown news may actually be the only news that actually qualifies as new, bad stuff, even though it actually happened back in March.

If POB going pro is bad, then I hope we have a lot more of that type of bad news in years to come, when others have so much talent they leave after their sophomore year.

The news about the probation was simply reported late, as it actually happened last December.

The rest of the stuff listed like Dom Johnson going to ISU is hardly in the same category. That stuff happens every year.
And the "no love lost" between POB's step-dad and JL means very little and doesn't belong in this discussion.

But I wonder why the PJS people keep writing about bad stuff at BU.
Even right after BU's Sweet 16 appearance, there was such a piece. It never ends. It's like a guy who has to listen to his wife bringing up the Ex- all the time. I guess if there isn't any bad "news" to talk about, just rehash the old news and paint it in a bad way.

The one year probation started in May with the NCAA's final decision.

Yeah, I find the Dom Johnson mention and Jesse Gadison/Jim Les items very curious and questionable as newsworthy. Roy Bright and Marcus Sikes were much bigger recruiting losses than Johnson. And who cares if POB's stepdad and JL had a falling out? POB and JL didn't, and that's all that matters in that situation. Looks like a reach, maybe the powers-that-be gave Reynolds a deadline on a BU story, and he needed filler material.

reynolds mentioned a couple things that i wasn't aware of. first that coach les extension was for more than 5 years. also that pob's step father had some negative issues with coach les.

overall reynolds does a decent job. he just can't be an extension of bobby parker's role.

An extension for more than 5 years is very good news. Why is this merely mentioned in passing and not worthy of publicizing with a headline or a separate article about Coach Les? This kind of news would be a major news topic at other schools.
If Porter Moser or even Bruce Weber got a 5 year extension, I would expect to see that reported prominently.

I know bad news sells better than good news. And I agree that Dave Reynolds is the best Bradley beat writer we've ever had (I go back to the 60's). But it does seem like there is an effort to drag up old stuff repeatedly as long as it's bad news.

well bu can't have it both ways. the other schools that you mention make a public annoucement. bu hides behind the fact that they are private school so they are not forthcoming with infromation but then thet feel slighted? you can't have it both ways.

in otherwords, there was never a public annoucement of coach les's extension like bruce weber's. how can we complain about the coverage when we want to be private and control content?

                      gotta be a two-way street,imo.

News is news. Reporters shouldn't make judgements on whether to report news items based on whether the source wants it reported or not. That's what the columnists are there to dissect. Jim Les' 5 year extension is a major news story. It's absolutely ridiculous to mention it in passing while discussing other things.

I agree, and the year probation thing also was not readily discussed by BU but the PJS dug
and made a huge story out of it, so there's your real inconsistency.
In fact the PJS several times made a bigger story out of Les NOT HAVING a contract extension
most of the 2005-2006 season, than they have about getting one.

Could you write a story about my salary if my employer or myself wouldn't give you any details?

It should be a major story for BU, but Bradley University or Jim Les doesn't give details. That was their decision. The reporter could probably snoop around and try to find details, but then he would be burning a major bridge if he wrote about something that they didn't want reported.

If someone wanted to get the story on your salary, I think they could try to find out enough to write about it.

Since the writer of the article did know about the new contract, and knew about it's approximate length, was this the way to report it? Just barely mention it in passing?
