I remember when Squeaky made a shot in the Fieldhouse from about the same distance. Does anyone know if I'm correct that they placed a different colored board on the spot from where he shot? I'm not sure, I was just a youngster.

fwiw I believe that channel 25 mentioned Squeaky's shot during the report about Robert's.Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

I don't know about Squeaky's shot... But I do think a single floor board being made red or something is a cool idea.

I don't know if that's true about Squeaky, but there was a well-known recorded incident by a player whose career wrapped up right before Melchiorre's began.
There was a player from Rhode Island, Ernie Caverley, who hit a beyond half-court shot in Madison Square Garden where they did place a special board on the floor.
His shot in the at the end of regulation tied Bowling Green in the opening round of the 1946 NIT, sending it to OT, where URI eventually won 82-79, and advanced by winning one more game over Muhlenberg before losing to Kentucky by a single point 46-45 in the final.
As a result, he is forever known as the "Splendid Splinter."

There was talk about installing some sort of marker on the court, but don't think it ever happened. Subsequent events may have prevented it from happening.

Melchiorre and Mann were involved in a point-shaving/gambling scandal that rocked the college sports world back in 1949-1951. Bradley still suffers some shame because of it.

Trico & Van Pelt on ESPN Radio just brought up the CCNY scandal from 1950 in regards to college scandals have been long standing so the latest UConn is nothing new. Fortunately, they left it at 7 other schools were implicated but we remained nameless.
