  • Nebraska Coach is NEW Butler AD/Altman to NU?

Why would the head coach at a Big XII school (7th season) want what amounts to an enormous step down?
I think the article offers the answer.

"Collier is entering the third year of a four-year contract with a salary of $633,818, four to five times what an athletic director at a mid-major typically earns."

    but...

"Collier has been under fire recently at Nebraska...
Speculation about his future was rampant ..."

Collier was the head coach at Butler that started their run of a few great years. I think he had the team when they beat Bradley in the NIT in 98. He then took them to the NCAA the year or two after and almost beat eventual runner-up Florida in a 1st round overtime loss.

They speculate the Dana Altman may be considered to replace Collier as head coach at Nebraska, but that he would probably not be interested.

The top prospects mentioned are Mark Fox of Nevada, Steve McClain of Wyoming, or Jim Christian of Kent State.

ESPN is reporting that Collier has accepted the AD job at Butler
          and that the very
top target to replace Collier as
Nebraska's head basketball coach is Dana Altman
Barry Collier resigned as Nebraska's basketball coach Tuesday to become athletic director at Butler, where he coached basketball for 11 years.

Foxsports reports Wichita State's Mark Turgeon is also a possibility

this would actually be a step-down for both turgeon and altman. would be shocked if either went to nebraska. lincoln is all about football.

If you read the details, it appears to be a strange move for all involved.

For Collier, he is making $600,000+ (incentives, shoe money, appearing in ads, and doing some radio and TV bring the total to $800,000 or so)
It appears to be a bad move because the Butler AD job only pays 1/4 or 1/5 of that.

Plus Collier had been rumored to be possibly in his last year at Nebraska as he has not gotten them to the dance since he's been there. So it is quite possibly that had he stayed one more year at Nebraska, they'd have then bought out his final two years for another million or so.

From the Nebraska standpoint, it's great that he's leaving on his own, because if they fired him, they'd have to pay on his contract for 2-3 years to come.
But if NU hires someone of the stature of Altman, Turgeon, etc. it's going to cost a bunch to lure them and likely even more to free them up where they are.

Would someone like Jim Molinari or a top assistant elsewhere be a reasonable candidate?

There is NO CHANCE Altman ends up at Nebraska.

                Same with Turgeon.

                  I agree completely.

I laugh at anyone suggesting different.

Ignorance and arrogance will be the only factors bringing one to a conclusion Altman and Turgeon would take the NU gig.

Altman already has the best basketball program in the state of Nebraska as evidenced by their 7 straight regular seasons wins over the Huskers. Why would he take a step down?

But they acknowledge they mention Altman out of courtesy only, and concede he isn't likely to get the job.

Since this was interpreted as vague by some, Pederson clarified to local media later in the evening that what he meant is that Dana Altman is not a candidate for the job and will not be pursued.

don't think he'd take it anyway.
