  • Any ideas why NCAA makes custom floors?

I think the NCAA has really gone overboard with these generic custom floors they use for the NCAA tournament. 2 years ago, they started using them for all of the 4 regionals, then this year - they added the same boring generic courts for 1st round games in Boise, Kansas City, Greensboro, and Portland.

I think it is probably a big waste of money... all of these arenas already have floors they can use. They could easily cover up any NBA logos like they always have.

I also think it really takes away from the experience of watching games. I went to a Buffalo Wildwings yesterday and you really couldn't easily tell what game you were watching when multiple games were going on. I guess I long for the "old days" where each arena used their own courts.

Part of it is removing any advertising whatsoever from the floors and arenas, really. They have some agreement with the sponsors of the tournament to keep it clean.

It's like the rule where any beverage that is near the court, by rule, is only allowed to be in a cup that has the vitamin water logo on it. And that Coke products are the only type of beverage allowed.

I read somewhere that the NCAA donates the floors to schools that can't afford new ones. I think that's right. My mind is still fried from working the boy's tournament.

I kind of like the clean look of the floors. And you avoid having multiple 3-pt lines.

Plus, have you seen Boise State's court? No one should be subject to watching anything on that court...
People need to recognize there is a huge difference between playing hard, and playing well...

I don't think these floors are all new. Those floor pieces are interchangeable so they probably only need certain pieces to get a different jump circle. I'm sure they also use decals that can be placed over an existing floor that aren't permanent.
