Here is what I have read:
Mid level officials in Division 1 get $500-$750 per game. Higher level conferences like Big 10 and Big East pay $1000 up to $1500. And that includes the ref's travel and lodging expenses.
Lower level D1, D2, and D3 officials work for less- around $250-$500 per game.

According to a USAToday article three years ago:
"And to attract top referees who also work Big 12 or Big Ten games, a tiered pay structure was instituted ??” the best receive $1,600, including travel and per diem, for non-weekend games and $1,800 for Saturday games, Elgin said. In some cases, that's a $1,200-per-game increase over last year. The pay scale for less-experienced referees ranges from $850-$1,200."
But I just read something a couple of weeks ago that as I recall said the Valley was paying over $2000 a game this year for weekend games. In particular, it mentioned how by offering a flat fee instead of paying traveling expenses and offering a Saturday and Sunday pair of games with a short drive (like Bradley, ISU) they could make it more worthwhile for a top official to work MVC games. I can't recall where I read that, though.

I think the MVC referees get paid $1 per whistle.Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
