  • St. Marys Technical foul

I'm assuming most of you saw this about St. Marys getting a Technical before the Champ. game even started. Got the T for dunking during warmups and was down 1 zip before the tipoff lol. I've never heard of such a thing and have seen many players do it before.

I think this lunacy was more common during the era when dunking during games was outlawed.

my memory isn't great, but i seem to recall that it's cause teams would showboat and try to intimidate other teams by dunking during warmups. I seem to even remember an interview with a ref who did a game with a huge fight in it that was highlighted on this board not more than a couple weeks ago.

In any case, all players should know that you don't dunk during warmups; it's one of the reasons that refs stand there to watch. it's not like the refs are watching because they're in awe of a team's crisp shoot around.

I remember when dunking during games was outlawed, unfortunately it was when I was at Bradley. Man, would I have loved to see Willie Betts slam some down. It only lasted for a few years, that is until Lew Alcindor was finished at UCLA. The powers that were back then were jealous and thought he had an unfair advantage. Also something about the breaking of backboards before the hinged rim came into being. I didn't know the rule about pregame dunks was still in force. Remember that tournament in Hoffman Estates a couple years ago and one of the players on one of the teams threw the ball off the backboard during warmups and slammed it down with great style and the fans that were there went nuts with great appreciation, there was no technical called.

This is a rule I believe because of the intimidation factor. This has been a rule as long as I can remember. Happened before a Limestone game a couple of years ago against Morton I believe. Players and coaches know this is a rule and St. Marys should have realized who was watching!
Some see a hopeless end, while others see an endless hope.

Yea yea....Big game so the refs instead of showing who is boss should have went over to their coach and said this is a warning! Period! But maybe this is something that stemmed over from another game?????

Here's another warmup dunking incident. Only this time a 160 lb kid shattered the backboard and it cost his team their playoffs.
