This really is a great, well-written article! I really hope the NCAA amends their rules soon and either:
1) Provide relief and/or some subjectivity regarding penalties in situations similar to Ray's, or
2) Apply this "death penalty" approach across the board to both institutions and not just players.
I'm really glad to see Kavanaugh say that BU's athlete testing for drugs will be enhanced/increased. With BU playing the role of "parent" for these athletes it really is their responsibility to make sure these kids stay clean.
To me it sounds like Bradley's program, might be a little bit behind in controlling their players. If they had more "control" over their student athletes Will and POB most likely would not have gotten "overpaid" for their work last summer. Also, if Bradley tested their athletes like other programs do, they would have found Ray positive before the NCAA did and therefore we may have only lost him for the rest of last year and not this entire season. With this I am not taking any blame away from Ray Brown, he was in the wrong and he must pay the piper, but Bradley has let some big time infractions fall through the cracks and that ended up hurting them in the end I think that the whole athletic dept. needs to take a step back and look and the miscues they have made in the last two years and make sure this doesn't happen anymore. As much as Bradley is put under the microscope, as many of us claim, the people that run this program should identify that and be extra careful with what they do, and how they handle things. If you take a step back and just look at the last 2 years: we have had 2 student athletes getting overpaid which is an infraction and we have another one suspended for drug use. This is sounding more and more like a UNLV type program. We know it's not, but if you were someone looking in from the outside and see these 3 infractions, it doesn't look very good at all. We need to be more careful, before we get this "death penalty" everyone is talking about.
