Jim Bain will be retiring as head of MVC officiating at the conclusion of this year. And Valley fans have continued to be less than enthused (I am not one of those, mind you) with MVC officiating this year. At any rate this is posted for their appreciation.
I was digging around through some college basketball literature, and I found a paragraph in a book about Jim Bain. The book is John Feinstein's "A Season Inside" which is a travelogue/behind-the-scenes look at the 1987-88 college basketball season and the book that immediately followed "A Season on the Brink".
The passage also includes Gary Williams (then coach at Ohio State) and takes place during the Big Ten game with Purdue @ Mackey Arena.

Williams keeps his team in the game. It isn't easy, though. Early in the first half he gets nailed for a technical by referee Jim Bain while arguing a call that Bain has clearly botched. This is a Bain tradition. When he blows a call and a coach argues, he often reinforces his error by calling a technical. No one in basketball is quite sure how Bain keeps getting top assignments, but he does. He will work a regional final in the NCAA Tournament in March.
