Booker Woodfox of Creighton gets some national pub

Here is more about Booker Woodfox, who is my pick for the Valley Player of the Year.--
He was a lightly recruited player out of Lewisville High School, near Dallas. He committed to Louisiana Lafayette, over Marshall, Oral Roberts, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He had a pretty good high school career, and was named All-State 3 years in a row. He averaged 21 ppg as a senior.

But he ended up at San Jacinto junior college in Pasadena, Texas, near Houston. There he had a good, though not spectacular career. He received little Division I interest, as a 6' shooting guard. He averaged 15 ppg as a freshman, and 18.3 ppg as a sophomore. His soph season, he shot 89.9% from the free throw line, 3rd nationally that year. He made 99 threes as a freshman, and 85 as a soph. That is one less than the 185 threes that Tyrone Cole-Scott made in his 2 years at Tyler junior college.

He committed to Creighton late in March of 2007, after Dana Altman failed to land some of his other top choices for shooting guards to replace Nate Funk, one of which was Tyrone Cole-Scott. According to Rivals, Creighton was the only D1 offer Woodfox got. He was "also getting looks from North Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi", but no other offers!

This is why Creighton is Creighton and Bradley is Bradley. They miss out on a recruit because of us and end up getting the soon to be national leader in 3pt percentage......CU is creeping up there in all-time luckiest teams around.

may it be noted that in the game Woodfox played in Peoria, he didn't score a single point and never even got a shot off from 3-pt range...

He was a nice decoy. Too bad we don't have a decoy like that. I can't remeber, but who lit us up that night?

I agree a bit here. Dana Altman is a smart man, smarter than most coaches. And he recruits the right kids to play in his system. But there is no way he knew Booker Woodfox would be as good as he was, would lead the nation in 3-point shooting, and would be a candidate for Player of the Year. I'd bet he was counting on him as a role player and part-time starter.

I was joking too. I just was too lazy to put in a "smiley". The only thing I said that I meant as serious was the part where I asked who lit us up? I don't remeber... maybe it was more of a complete team game that night instead of one guy and that is why I don't remember.

Just to play devil's advocate here. If I were a CU fan then I would be clamoring at this thread and saying Creighton is Creighton because of Dana Altman and the reason why Woodfox is where he is today is because of coaching. I said earlier that Creighton is good because they are lucky (and no doubt they are) but others would say it's because of coaching. I can't for the life of me think that DA would be able to take that kid and make him the #1 3pt shooter in the nation though. You never know though didn't we have someone like that two years ago?

Maybe a small bit of truth to that. But for the most part, you can't take just any player, especially a juco who is already mostly developed, and turn him into the best 3-point shooter in the country.

It is similar to the story with Will Franklin. The juco coach didn't know what a good player Will was, and when he got a chance to show his offense at Bradley, he blossomed. I think the same is true with Woodfox.

Wasn't Theron Wilson sort of a recruiting afterthought too? I remember him signing relatively late, and he has arguably become Bradley's best player this year.

It's all because of coaching!!!!

But let's be honest here...there's a difference between getting Theron to what he is and getting what Booker was to what he is now......big difference
