UNI to drop Baseball...
after the 2009 season to save money...I did not know that Iowa state dropped baseball in 2001 to save money?

This will get interesting at least on the mid-major level.
I believe the MVC requires softball for membership because it makes it easier for members to be in compliance with Title IX.
I wonder if there are other leagues out there that have similar requirements. That alone ties the hands of schools as they are forced to make cuts. And it is likely to be men's sports as you see already with UNI and Hawai'i that are going to take the brunt of it.

The MVC will keep the team number to ten (with all being in St. Louis) for the MVC Tourney. I honestly couldn't see it happening with Arch Madness getting back to 8 teams or having play-in games on campus. That sets the MVC back 20 years, IMO.
Schools are going to continue to cut sports, especially in economically tough times. The rate of cutting sports has increased over the past decade, and I don't see any slow down in sight. I can actually see the NCAA lowering the number of sports necessary for a DI school to particpate, in order to keep their DI status.

Yes, I agree. I thought I put that caveat in my previous post, but didn't.
I found another article this morning discussing baseball's future as an NCAA sport. Anyone know how many D-I schools have baseball?

The most recent ncaa apr rankings lists 296 Division 1 schools offering baseball. However the article you provided a link to says that 291 schools offer baseball. Many of those schools are not fully funded.
