Until Granger does it for as many years as the Hawk did in the NBA, he is not in my mind close to him. Also Hawkins had a much better distinguish college career then Granger. To say that he is better is premature IMO."Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."

Didn't we also graduate a #1 overall NBA draft pick once? I bet that guy was pretty talented too.

i dont think we ever had a #1 pick. (hawkins was #6 and i think that is highest bu player to be drafted?) if im wrong here correct me and give me a name. but hawkins yes was good and had one all star year that was good where ithink he averaged about 22 ppg. BUT, he was always a role player and never was the star of the team. Granger is a very young player who is the star of the team already (granted not a great team but a decent team that loses a lot of clsoe games). Granger no doubt has had the best year (this year) of the 2 players in their careers (although Grangers is just getting started). if that last statement was unclear what i said was hawkins never had as good of season as granger already having in his early career. I agree that hawkins of course had better college career NO DOUBT! but better college career does not translate into talent and success in next level and what not (exs. morrison, jj reddick, kwame brown ugh how i hate brown lol) Hawkins averaged about 37 a game one year at bu i think!?! i mean geeeeeeeeeez, and you all think curry is good! hawkins was way better than steph cury. but yea if granger keeps up his good work in nba he no doubt the most successul nba player to be in bu at one point and he is a better talent than hawkins i mean granger is 6'7ish and is a good guard. butwith that said i love hawkins and he is number 2 in talent as far as players at BU behind granger but if i had to pick my favorite of all time bu that played 4 years...Hawkins is my man, i mean 37ppg, thats insane!!!!!!!!

Gene "Squeaky" Melchiorre was the #1 overall pick in the 1951 NBA draft.

That's who I was referring to. We won't be able to comment on your latest post heybballfans, as he was never allowed to play in the NBA because of the gambling scandal.

I don't agree with that statement at all. I never saw Melchiorre play, having been born in 1951... But had Melchiorre been born years later and benefitted from the same athletica opportunities and was exposed to the same level of opportunity as Granger or Hawkins he may have very well still been a #1 draft pick. By description he sounds a lot like much shorter Pistol Pete.
It's like Babe Ruth. Yeah, if you managed to teleport the 1920s Babe into 2009 he'd be well outclassed. But if you had the Babe born in 1985 I think he'd still probably be the best baseball player of all time.

yea but baseball is less dauting of a task to transport players. bball has gotten faster and stronger and everything more. in 1951 they did not train as hard and lift as much and what not. he would just be outclassed by granger and hawkins. maybe if that guy trained and stuff like they do now hed be fine but im saying him at his prime and others at their prime with no extra help and he would be outclasses

Yeah, that's exactly what I just said, basically. Even players from our era here (like Granger) are completely different physically than players from Hawk's time. I also don't think it's really any different for either sport... Baseball players are monstrous in every possible dimension when compared to their 1920 counterpart. Had Gene Melchiorre been born in 1985 he'd be much stronger and more athletic than he surely was in 1951. He'd probably even be a bit taller.

This is why I think that it best to rank players by their era. Can you compare Hawk to Melchiorre? Sure, but it really isnt fair to either player.Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

Where would Phegley or JJ be if we had the 3 point shot when they played. Talk to me about how great Granger is when he becomes a true team player like Hawk was in the NBA. I heard from many players how Hawk was the perfect teammate. He could score but he was always looking for the player w/ the best shot. I am sure some of that was by design but I have not seen that w/ Granger & I know a lot of that is because he doesn't have a lot of talent around him.
I will give him credit for getting his act together and putting in the work that it takes to be a star in the NBA though because he was mislead by some people while at BU or he would have been one of the top 5 players to play here. The way it is he is only a quitter when it comes to BU
