NCAA Violation?

Hey, I ran across this....
it's just a little blurb in an article that wasn't even about sports....but it says.....(about University of Illinois Urbana campus)
...it seems to let slip a little info that appears somewhat dam*ning as far as NCAA violations are concerned...

"Alumni donated funding for some extras, like basketball shoes
for a student who wants to play on the team..."

isn't this a clear NCAA violation??
Didn't some schools get hammered just for buying a kid a hamburger or for taking him to dinner at Mt. Hawley?
Does anyone know how or why this wouldn't be an NCAA violation??

Isn't this kind of similar to C. Webber's deal up in Michigan? I remember something about booster payments but didn't follow it to closely.

Even the way that's worded seems to indicate that someone gave money to the program so they could buy shoes. I think as long as the money was given to the school and then used to buy gear it's not a violation?

That may be the case. But in this case it sounds like some of these kids would potentially not be able to play ball because of the inability to buy the right shoes. I'm all for kids getting that, even if it's a "benefit" or "violation." You need those to play.

Now if its a new pair every week, or a flat screen TV, or rent being paid for... thats a different story.

If I'm reading the article correctly, alumni of the high school bought shoes for a player on the team. I don't think it said they were U of I alumni, so the NCAA wouldn't have any jurisdiction.
