  • Loyola winning at Butler 37-23- halftime

    Halftime:
    Loyola 37
    Butler 23

Loyola had looked like they had given up on this season. They have lost their last 6 games, none of them close, including a 71-47 loss at Valpo Friday. Now they are taking it to Butler on their home court.
I expect the final outcome to be a bit different, but this score is surprising.

    Update...

    Buter 39
    Loyola 53
    10:50 2nd Half

Gordon Hayward has taken only 5 shots. In the games I've seen Butler play this year, when he plays well the whole team seems to play well. I love a good upset, but with Utah St. losing yesterday, I'd like to see Butler win to keep a mid-major in the Top 25.

No, no, please no! If we have any more bad luck, we'll have no luck at all! Now we get Loyola when they start to get hot? Please! Well, Butler still has time, but that would be a horrible loss for them!

        Loyola 63
        Butler 51

        5:29 remaining

I think this would get Bradley's attention if Loyola can hold on.

Loyola blows...whether they win today or not. If they did win today, that would make them 1-6 in their last 7 games...One game does not make a 'hot streak'.
Indy State won at UNI and Ill. St....it still doesn't change the fact that they are an awful basketball team.

Indiana State was also 0-7 in the 7 games prior to their current 3 game winning streak. Just trying to fuel the fire that Loyola is hot, haha.

Here's what I see as possibly playing out....

              Loyola beats Butler. Whatever.
              Loyola beats Bradley. Whatever.

Then some Schadenfreude UIUC fans will seek me out to stick it in my face Bradley losing to Loyola. Then I get to point out they also beat Butler.

              Good.

              Or -

              Loyola beats Butler. Whatever.
              Bradley beats Loyola. Whatever.

But then I won't see a UIUC fan for about a week.

              Really good.

I am telling you how it is in my world. That is exactly the crap I put up with. I don't go looking for them... they come to seek me out. After Bradley's Sweet 16, I didn't see a UIUC fan for like a month. I take that back... I had one seek me out on the Monday after we beat Pitt. Instead of congratulations... before anything was said, the first thing quickly out of his mouth was, "Well, you won't beat Memphis." I said, "That game isn't for a few days, I'm not even thinking about Memphis, can I just enjoy this for a little while. How about those 2 big wins?" Silence. Stunned, blank look face from the UIUC fan... and then he left.

People think I make this crap up - LOL!

Btw... Congrats to Loyola for picking up a nice road win at Butler (71-67, I think).

That's typical BCS mentality. They cannot stand it when a non-BCS team earns an at-large bid to the tournament, let alone a deep run. Guess what? There are mid-major teams capable of beating BCS teams everyday!

Now the good thing about the CBI or NIT or whatever other consolation tournament out there is that while not our ultimate goal, we still get an opportunity to play teams that will have nothing to do with us otherwise which makes tournaments like this worth it. We got a chance to play and beat Cincinnati and Virginia in the CBI last year. Granted both teams had mediocre records, particularly Cincinnati, but Cincinnati still beat four top 25 teams last year. And beating even mediocre BCS teams sends a message to fans like your friend that they don't like hearing.

I know we beat a 13-18 Cincinnati team, but most BCS "pundits" believe that Cincinnati would have won the Valley regular season had they played in our conference. That's why I value wins against teams like them even if they are not that great. And this is a team that people like Digger Phelps would argue would belong in the tournament over say a 21-6 Siena team because they beat four top 25 teams. However what they tend to forget is that they probably lost at least seven or more games to questionable teams. Making the tournament has nothing to do with how many good teams someone beats. It has everything to do with consistency, which is a combination of beating good teams and more importantly beating the teams that one should be beating.

Now tying this into the Loyola/Butler game today, I for one am upset that they won, for two reasons. First, Butler losing a game like this feeds more into the "BCS is the only thing that counts" mentality than ever before. Therefore, that loss probably knocked Butler down by about two seeds, but we'll see what happens later on this season. Second, while Loyola is still an awful team, as has been pointed out Indiana St is now on a bit of a roll following their upset of UNI. That's why Loyola now scares me a bit. Yes, I have seen them play on tv here in Chicago and they looked awful losing to the likes of perennial Horizon "powers" Youngstown St and Valparaiso! But sometimes it takes one game like today's to light a fire. Hopefully though for Bradley's sake today's win was just a fluke!

I know people in Peoria who hate Bradley because of BU fans who were pains in the you know what when the Braves were considered a powerhouse. Every team has fans like that, BU included.
