Washington Post on Recruiting: Do you think this is an accurate portrayal?

I was quite surprised by an article I read in the Washington Post about recruiting practices/violations that happen in today's college basketball environment. I was just curious to see what other posters thought of this article. Do you think this is an accurate portrayal of today's recruiting landscape? If so, what measures would you like to see implemented to stop some of these alleged abuses?

Universities hiring old high school coaches of potential recruits is nothing new.

the difference is that the money is fully intended to trickle down to Beasley in some obscure, unfindable way...
In the old days you just hired the recruit's coach, but that coach kept his salary...

I suppose. Cheating and paying players is nothing new. I doubt it will stop much either. It happens at the small major, mid major, and high major level.

I don't think so.....
If BU were to even offer to pay for a plane ticket for Anthony Webster or a dinner at Mt. Hawley CC for a recruit, they get hammered...
but if a BCS school funnels $420,000 through an AAU coach or pays for luxury apartments and huge screen TV's for Reggie Bush & OJ Mayo,
then we never hear of any interest from the NCAA.
It is clearly a double standard.

Im not a believer in the NCAA Double Standard thing. Was there any proof USC paid for stuff for Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo?

Wasn't it an agent who is also a USC booster who paid for the stuff for Bush? And wasn't it a booster who offered the job to Webster's father? Either way, the school is responsible for compliance and for knowing about it, and responsible for the penalties.

As long as the NAIA is in existance nothing can really be done about the NCAA double standard and enforcement bias. If the small schools do end up pushing to hard the BCS will form a new association alone.

As much as Gary Williams gets bashed, in this I admire him, He is staying clean and it might even cost hi his job.

To be clear, he is staying clean according to Gary Williams. Coaches mentioned in the article who do interact with the AAU coaches mentioned, John Thompson III, Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, etc. are also well respected coaches who are winning. Talking to AAU coaches doesnt make you dirty. It makes you smart.

talking is one thing. Hiring them like Kansas State sis on the other hand......
I am not accusing Thompson III, Boeheim, etc... of anything at all but Williams is staying above reproach in this area.

Understood. But Kansas State is one example. But Williams is burying himself if he thinks he doesnt need to interact with AAU coaches. That is certainly his choice but he shouldn't complain if he doesnt get as good of players.

Williams is blaming the Thompson's, Boeheim's and Calhoun's of the world of guilt by association. Basically "All AAU coaches are cheating slimebags. Those who deal with them must cheat because that's what all these AAU coaches want."
