The other night as I was watching a college game there was .6 left on the game clock when a team was shooting a free throw. The announcer was saying that the clock will start when the ball hits the rim....I thought the clock started when a player touches it on the rebound? At first I thought I heard wrong but he said it a couple of times

When is the clock suppose to start on a missed free throw?

I saw that too. I think Fran F. was wrong there. It starts once the ball is touched. I thought I was 100% right on that but his comment made me think twice. Maybe someone can check.

It should start as soon as the ball leaves the rim on a missed freethrow.

After thinking about it there is no way they start the clock when the ball hits the rim. How would they know for sure it won't go in?

So I looked it up and page 92 says the clock starts when it touches a player after a mssed free throw.

Starts with touch. Period.

lefty...you are right, the clock starts only when a player touches it.
I have seen a FT bound high off the rim and touch a support wire or the shot clock causing a violation and a whistle...but yet, the clock never starts on that play.

It's the same as when you inbound a ball or on the tip-toss....the clock only starts when a player touches it.

Thanks tornado. I like Jimmy Dykes (I said Fran F. yesterday but I was wrong) on broadcasts but I was surprised he had that so wrong.
