  • Ruff vs. Edge

I thought we could all do a little comparison here between the two. I'll start with stats and the rest of you can continue with analysis having seen them play. This may be better after the season is over because Ruff's stats are from one entire year. Also Ruff was a redshirt freshman.

    Freshman year:

GS MPG FG PCT. 3pt PCT. FT PCT. Avg. Reb. Assists T/O ST. PTS. AVG. PTS.

    Edge:14 23.9 .447 .344 .625 2.3 70 55 23 128 6.1

    Ruff: 27 34.1 .374 .270 .765 3.0 132 73 40 176 6.3

So far stat wise I think Edge is just as good as Ruff was, Edge just needs to cut down turnovers. By next year I think he will really be off and running. Also I think Edge has a little more scoring ability, and made shots already that Ruff was making his senior year. What's your opinion?

It should be pointed out that Ruff was not a true freshman and EM is. When you consider Ruff had a year of practice with the team I would say EM is holding his own rather well.

I did point that out in the original post. I think that is one of the reasons why Ruff had so many assists that year, he had a year to build chemistry before seeing the court. Plus Edge doesn't have a go to guy like JC was last year.

Was talking about this the other day. I think Edge at the same point in his career is a much more capable offensive player. Stat lines aren't all that different, but just the infamous "eye test" tells me he is. Ruffin, though, was a better defensive player when he first got on the floor for us. McCain has really come along in his defense already, though, so who knows where the ceiling is.

Very much enjoying watching McCain develop as he's really really improved as the year has come along.

McCain has improved and thats great but, and not to hijack the thread, I'm really excited about Norris. NOT that I think he is or will be better then EM but I thought he was going to be left out this year.

He's gotten some PT and made the most out of it......these guys are both going to serve us well.

Technically, didn't Ruff have to completely leave the BU team after his appeal was denied? (in Nov or Dec)
Although while he was banned from BU, I think he might of found a few open gyms against an NBA lottery pick (SL)...

Sorry Stryker you did point it out, I missed it.

I think this is a great freshman class, I love Brown!!!

I actually thought b4 the season started that edge would sit more and Norris would be playing more since our 3 pt shooting was down. Turned out to be the opposite!

I agree that at this point it looks like EM is going to be a little better offensively than Ruff. The thing that I loved about Ruff was the way he totally neutralized the other teams point guard. He forced the opposing point guard out of their comfort zone with his defense. It made it very difficult for the other team to start running their offense because Ruff would absolutely hound the guy on defense. I hope EM becomes as good or better at doing this...I think he will!

I know it's fun to compare but it's really hard to especially on PG.

Who is playing with them makes a huge difference.

IMO Ruff had some better guys to play with and EM has the benefit of JL with more experience

I'm not trying to be a downer but I always felt that Ruffin was over-rated. He certainly was a good college point guard, but he was no Willie Scott, Jim Les, or Anthony Manuel for that matter.

I think McCain has a lot of potential and hope he develops into a better point guard than Ruffin. Ruffin never did learn not to drive the lane without leaving his feet while out of control; he was often bailed out his junior year by having POB and other great teamates. His senior year he lust looked plain bad on occasion with no one to bail out his out-of-control drives.

I agree that true measuring stick of McCain's potential (and the ability to fairly compare him against Ruff) will be next year when he has a year's experience like Ruff technically had during his first year. I like McCain's potential better because he has a more physical body like Anthony Manuel and should be better able to handle more physical guards both offensively and defensively. Once (if) he becomes a more consistent outside threat and BU gets a true big man (or better big forwards) I think McCain could potentially go down in history as one of BU's better point guards.

As for Norris, I really like the kid and think he can develop into a big-time 2-guard. He has a sweet stroke and really seems to have some "lock down" defensive abilities.

Ruff had a great career at Bradley and I don't want to take much away from that, but it's time that people realize why the team underachieved last season. That team had high expectations because of two very good senior guards, one of which had an absolutely terrific senior season.

Now, back on topic. I am ridiculously excited by this freshman class! AT, WE (he'll be a senior with these guys), DN, TB, and EM are going to be a fantastic senior class!!

He needs to get some more PT IMO...

He could be that zone breaker we've desperately needed...

He did get hot for a bit on Wed. but Coach chose to play him in 3 min increments...why I do not know, but he is a capable shooter and he plays solid D...

He is what Will Franklin would have looked like with 4 years @ Bradley IMO.

Whats interesting is that as good as EM and Norris are Taylor Brown may end up being the best of the three. Taylor Brown has impressed me every time he gets on the floor......and he doesnt get on the floor enough.
