  • Marcellus Sommerville update

Cellus and the Dallas Mavericks' summer league team played last night. The Lakers beat the Mavs 99-87.

Cellus had another very good game, 6-14, 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, in just 20 minutes played.

I was looking at some of the box scores from yesterday, and here's one that caught my eye.

Brandon Roy scored 35 points for Portland and grabbed 7 rebs, Aldridge got 19/9, and yet the Blazers still lost to the Suns.

      Another update- Thursday night's game--
The Dallas Mavericks summer league team played again on Thursday night, and Marcellus started at the forward position.
The Mavs lost in overtime to the Grizzlies 121-117.

Cellus played 43 minutes and 18 seconds in the game, more than any other player. He was 7-19 from the floor, and 3-3 from the free throw line for 18 points, and he had 10 rebounds. He also had 4 assists and 3 steals.

The extensive amount of playing time suggests that the Mavs are taking a long look at Cellus. Cellus has improved each game and had a great game tonight, but it is highly unlikely he will make the roster of the Mavs.

One further move that means Cellus will be headed to Europe is that the Mavs have signed another free agent- former Clemson University shooting guard, Greg Buckner, to a contract--

      Congratulations Cellus!

Cellus with 18 pts and 10 rebs I can believe, but
        Cellus with 4 assists?

Looks like the NBA 3-pt line is a little bit outside Cellus' range.

With these strong performances, there's a chance 'Cellus could catch on with another team if the Mavericks decide to pass on him. I think he'll be in a camp somewhere in October.
          Onward and Upward!

Sommerville has the body and the talent to play in the NBA IMO. Whether he does or not is going to be determined by the old numbers game.

Regardless, he should be able to have a nice long career playing professionally somewhere. Maybe he's best served by playing in Europe a couple years and working on his outside shot and defense. Maybe in a few years he can make the jump to the NBA.

Good for him. He was excellent the last 6 weeks of the season for you guys. His performance thus far this summer will surely open some eyes.

But some people think his chances are "one in a million".

who thinks that??? He has a solid chance, I think. I like his athleticism and his game. Always have. I really think he could be a very good defender if he applies himself in that area. He is strong and athletic.

                  Danny-
It was a play on something said on the other board by someone who thought Cellus' chances of playing NBA ball were pretty slim.

tornado - i think someone posted that the odds of him being drafted was one in a million, not playing in the nba. either way i would take those odds.

It was 'something' and it was 'little'.

I see the Mad Hatter (Hatten) is in action.

(I think he took his St Johnie's to the 2002 NIT championship - I think - against G'town, errrr... I can't recall and it isn't really all that important other than to point out that here is a kid that must be on the fringe working to get in 4 years after graduation. If Cellus doesn't make it in this year, he needs to stay in shape, work hard and it could pay off later down the road.

                          Oh......OK

Had to be someone who never saw him play or doesn't know much about basketball.

Probably one those geniuses who said Patrick O'Bryant wasn't ready to play Division I basketball when he came to Bradley, or that he wasn't close to being an NBA player this year.
