  • Sam Maniscalco article

Sam Maniscalco, one of Bradley's recruits for 2007, is playing this week at the Midwest All Star Basketball Camp at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL. Dave Reynolds apparently is at Lewis U, and posted an article in today's Peoria Journal Star about Sam.
It is not yet posted on the PJ Star website, maybe someone can put the link up when it becomes available.

But it is a great report on Sam and what he is doing this summer, and how he came to sign with Bradley.
It's a great article! Thanks Dave, for supplying diehard Bradley fans with information about a Bradley recruit. We need more of these kinds of articles!

Why is the tone and title of the article
"Sam, are you sure you're comfortable with your choice of BU?"

Is anyone planning on going to see Sam play this season? I hope someone posts his schedule so we can try to get up and see him.

If any of the Chicago area posters know where he'll be playing, let us know.

Perhaps it's playing on the fact that Illinois' top recruit isn't so sure about his oral committment anymore.

I'm sorry, I just don't see it Perhaps if I looked for the negative and try reading in things that are not even in this article........

The headline reads "Recruit knows what he's getting into.",
certainly has a tone of conjecture.
Are you related to Mac Mob?

No relation to Mac and still don't see this negative spin. That headline could mean many things.

It could mean he's getting himself into a situation where comparisons to his father will put added pressure on the kid.

It could mean he's going to a big-time, legendary basketball program and he'd better be ready for a significant step up in competition.

It could mean he'd better be ready for the pressure and inevitable comparisons to Les.

It could mean he'd better be ready for a a tough and rewarding academic atmosphere.

It could mean many things. I just choose not to read negative garbage into this that is nowhere in this article! Maybe I just wear rose-colored glasses or have bled Bradley red and white for too long -- Sorry!

Perhaps the title may suggest that to some, but I think Braves4life makes some great points. I also think that putting the focus on Bradley being his dream school might salt some of that doubt away.

I have the article in front of me, and to say "nowhere in this article!"
                      is just plain wrong

                      The title is
"Recruit knows what he is getting into"

So he isn't going to college, he's "getting into" something?

                      The subtitle is
"Maniscalco's talent, family link make him comfortable with Bradley"

So again, why the issue of what Maniscalco is "comfortable with" (Dave Reynolds' words, not mine)

And again, later in the article, Dave Reynolds asks Sam's father, Carl Maniscalco if Sam is comfortable with his choice, and Carl's answer is
"Sam is completely content knowing he's headed to Bradley."

So I guess we all know now that Sam is comfortable with his Bradley. It just seems like an odd thing to make such a big deal out of. Did Reynolds expect either Sam or his dad to say they were worried about what they were "getting into".
But there are three different references to whether Sam is comfortable with his choice, and it is there in the article.
Nobody ever said it is negative, but it is there.

Again, it is a father and his son who are making Illinois' life a living hell right now, and I think that is the indirect parallel DR was trying to make. I think that DR did a very nice job of slyly comparing the two situations (if you read between the lines), showing how his dad is very pro-Bradley, and how the player is as well. It seems to be quite the opposite with Eric Gordon and his attention-loving father.
                        Onward and Upward!

I think it's a reference to the now somewhat popular trend of committs de-committing. What makes Sam unique is that he committed (oral) as a junior.

Does anyone else agree that some of these kids have a "What can you do for me" attitude towards their recruitment? And with that I don't mean gifts, ( cash, cars, tuition etc..) but with playing time and other things of that nature.

These guys aren't pro free agents seeking that "home run" contract. They're incoming freshman, nothing more. Good for Sam for doing it his way, the right way.

The only negatives to be found in this article would be found by people with bone up their ___.

This is a great article and I applaud the the PJS for writing a great human interst story. There are so many positive things happening with the BU program - Sweet 16, at least 2 former players in the NBA, great recruits for this year and next year. The momentum is building and its fun to be associated with it!!!
