Maccabi is looking to upgrade their point guard position. They were weak at PG last year, after the point guard from their 2005 team, Sarunas Jasikevicius, left for the NBA.

I doubt Mekel would have wanted to stay and play for Tel Aviv, given his statement as to why he was looking to go to the US to play and stay away from his homeland:

"Mekel said playing basketball at an American university will allow him to
delay the military service required of Israelis after the age of 18."
