  • Worst officials I have ever seen... just maybe

I have NEVER complained one time on this board about the officials, but that was probably one of the worst officiated game I have ever witnessed (except for a couple that Sanchez did 10 years or so ago). The combined IQ of those refs probably couldn't be higher than 100. They were fooled time and time again by UNI's little flops, holds, tricks all night. The refs should be ashamed of themselves. Win or lose I was going to write this thread. Those guys stunk and should never be allowed to ref in the MVC again. It was like watching 3 Barney Fifes out there just waiting for their chance to use their bullet (in this case their whistle). There were terrible calls after terrible calls... for both sides. These guys were poor excuses for college refs. They should never quit their day jobs, and I hope they don't have any day jobs where they have to use any judgment because quite frankly, they don't have any.

Oh, on a side note, BU forgot AGAIN how to guard three point shooters. I blame Coach Les for that. First we lose Warren, then Egolf, then Wilkins, and now get screwed by the refs in a game we should have won. I am about sick of this season and ready to play some bad golf and drive my car. Get warm quick so I can forget this garbage and move on with more enjoyable endeavors. If you have not noticed, I am Pi**ed.

Why do you blame Coach Les? I saw at least three shots that UNI made where the player got caught by a back screen and didn't get out. How is that the coaches fault?

BU played well- but not well enough to win.. When your leading scorer doesn't score- it is hard to win anywhere! I think Wilson only took only 4-5 shots all night...

Win as a team, lose as a team... Dodie played great- Sam got the message and did as well.. This is a young team and I think if you asked anybody would we take 5-3 at this point, they would have said yes... Can we and should we do better- yes..
BUt let's not start jumping off the curb into traffic here people...
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

I feel your pain GTD....very upsetting L to swallow last night. We had them and we let them go. I think this team is learning though, and that will only benefit us down the stretch. It's hard to stay optimistic, assuming we win the next game, we are 6-3 in the conference with the harder half of the conference coming up. I'm not sure how many more games we can really lose to have a chance here but maybe even 2 is a stretch. I honestly feel we COULD be undefeated in conference play right now but it just didn't happen. This team is coming together and I think has realized fully that they need to play like they did last night (minus the 7 minute drought) to win games. I'm going out on a limb and saying we beat ISU and Creighton on their home courts. Don't go away yet GTD.

I was priviledged to have been sitting courtside to watch the game. And I almost never mention the officiating, or complain about it, because it never accomplishes anything. But....
The MVC must do something to correct the preponderance of blown charge/block calls made in MVC games. Nowhere else do you see so many of those flops under or even behind the backboard get called charges and baskets taken away. It is the cheapest foul you can call, and it is not deserving of a foul. If a defender cannot stop a player by actually playing defense on him, he should not be rewarded for an acting job under the basket after he gets beaten by the offensive player.

Last night's game was the most inconsistently called game I can recall seeing, and I've watched thousands of games. They allowed incredible amounts of hand-checking, and physical play around the basket, then called fouls on phantom touches sometimes far from the ball. And the flagrant foul call, as Kirk Wessler says, was bogus. No official in America would make that a flagrant foul at that point of the game and take the game out of the hands of the players. Only MVC refs, and apparently only Bo Boroski make that call, and the many other ridiculous calls that were made last night. If you are a UNI fan, you were happy with it, but anyone else, Bradley fan or neutral, would have felt cheated that they paid money to see a game that was decided by a officials.

Not sure who the other refs were... but the BO guy does mostly MAC, Summit, and Mid-Con games...

MVC had to dig deep to find him...

I have spent all night stewing about that game last night. Almost always an official does not lose or win a game. Last night versus UNI was the most inconsistant game I have seen officiated in the Valley. That game was the poster child for why many times Valley games are impossible to watch. Whistles everywhere, officials trying to establish that they are in control and absolutely no flow whatsoever to the game.

You see hand checks called fouls then you see a guy get run over or pushed out of the lane with no whistle, you see a charge called on a guy when the ball is out of his hands and he comes to a stop, you see a charged called on UNI when their player is in the air and ours goes directly below him.

The intentional foul was out of every call, well just a complete and utter joke of a call. No one unless, the player is infront of the pack on a break away and gets held, ever would call an intentional foul on an inbounds play with 22 seconds left on a foul that the guy saw from across the floor. It just seemed to me he had his mind made up that if he saw anything "rough" from Bradley he was going to make that call. Or he had enough of the earful he was getting from JL and wanted to make a real bad point right in front of Les that he "controlled the game". Regardless it was a gutless, unprofessional call. If any UNI fan were honest, there is no way you wanted that game for first place decided essentially by that type of call.

But, after all that it is very disappointing to see us go over 8 minutes without a field goal, not get a point from Wilson, but worse to me is we made very little effort to get him the ball in situations where he could score from the lane or go one on one to the rim. I thought we did not react very well to their changes in defenses in the second half and we also lost their shooters much to often in the second half, we got caught in back screens all night long and they recognized our inability to get rotation on to their shooters.

This game was extremely disappointing to lose, but we have two home games that I think we should win. If anyone told me we would be 5-3 after 8 and a good shot at 7-3 after 10 I doubt many on here would have not taken that. Lots of basketball to be played.

I think our next week's pick-em should be guessing the MVC's director of officials "points of emphasis" Tie breaker, number of fouls we receive.

but the guy had already committed to a flop so he went down anyway, and the ref had also already committed to blowing the whistle at least 10 seconds before the play developed, so he went right through with it.
Horrible, horrible call! There was no contact, no foul!!
It would be bad basketball, but hilarious on the next UNI drive for our entire team to flop, no matter where we are on the court

Good thing you didn't blame the coach for these shortcomings, but I will. He's the man and the buck stops there. Sorry Braveman, but what Houstontxbrave stated above is on the coach IMO. Again, I will say that I like Coach Les and I am not one of those that wishes him out, but we did not get to their shooters and that killed us. Being really small on the perimiter killed us too. It is pretty easy for a 6'3" guard to shoot over a 5'10" guard. Now, let's see, who recruited the numerous 5'10" (give or take an inch) guards we have???

Honestly George, I thought JL tried to make adjustments, going 1-3-1, then trying to go back to man to man, but we were getting lost in the lane on screens regardless of our defense. But it was also interesting to me the number of minutes Brown got in the late part of the game. He was lost several times defensively, as was Roberts. Both were getting back screened but no one was able to get out to their shooters.

And most of the time it didnt matter who was playing on the perimeter no one was getting out in the UNI players jersey making them either dribble or make a pass, they were shooting over nothing.

Look the intentional foul stands out bigtime but for me our not getting to their shooters and making them do something other then shoot was the biggest reason for our loss last night, well that and not scoring a field goal for 8 minutes, not getting a basket from Theron and what getting to to line in the first 30 minutes 1 time.

I really want to just forget about this one but when you have UNI down double digit with 10 minutes to play and have fought through what BU fought through to get to where they were, you have to, you must finish the game off. I dont think we got rattled we just stopped doing what got us the lead both offensively and defensively.

Im done with dwelling on it, I think we have a great opportunity to get two wins and get to 7-3 and a then a big one at ISU and then we have a chance to return the favor to UNI in a few games. We are by no means out of this conference race and I think the best for us is ahead of us this season. I think UNI is decent, but and Ill put it right here they will not win this conference race.

The officiating has been terrible for BU but it looks like the rest of the conference is also getting tired of the poor quality of officiating that goes on in this league. I was watching a few BCS games last evening and the amount of banging they allow is right up there with an NBA game practically and the flow of the game is determined by the team that can dictate it not the reffs. That is all that we ask for! The UNI point guard was pushing off all night long and if our guards put even a finger on him they were whistled for a foul. I've said it all along if the MVC does not do something about the quality of the reffing in this league it will always remain a step or two behind the BCS schools.

The conference has always paid less then what other conferences pay but is has also been a league where the top tier officals will only call a game on a night when the BCS is not playing or is a place where a new official can cut his teeth... ie Higgins, he did Valley games for several years before he got into BCS conferences.

The only that will allow for better officials is to either pay more or to move the games to off nights, Fridays/Sundays.

Also speaking of Higgins I think he officiates games in the Valley differently then he does in BCS conferences. He allows more contact outside of Valley games then he does in Valley games. I personally think that comes from the conference wanting the games called allowing less contact. I dont think he changes how he calls games based on the two teams playing.

Regardless Valley officating has been below average to very average for a very long period of time.
