  • Does anyone else think?

This is not to take away from the success that Creighton has had under Dana Altman.... but does anyone else think that they get more calls from refs than anyone else in the Valley? His spot as the dean amongst coaches seems to always get him a few extra calls per game.

Watching last night, Creighton got the benefit of so many whistles... they essentially won the game on the free throw line. Heck - after SIU missed a shot to tie the game, a Creighton guy completely rode the back of an SIU guy in position for the rebound. I know they are at home, but Creighton seems to get calls on the road as well.

SIU didn't help themselves down the stretch in regulation and overtime, but it was amazing to see some of the calls Creighton got. The foul on the 3-point attempt at the buzzer by Witter was a phantom foul that officials virtually never call at the end of a game.

They never call that unless Dana Altman is the coach of the team. I do think this is a reason Creighton struggles in the NCAA/NIT... they don't get the benefit of these phantom calls.

I agree, and how about the charging/flop call on one of the next SIU possesions. But SIU could have avoided all of their angst if they would have just fouled before the 3 point shot. There were less than 7 seconds left and they had a 3 point lead. DUMB!

Yes, the charging foul drawn by P'Allen was also bogus. The SIU player pulled up to a stop in the lane with minimal contact, but P'Allen was already into his orchestrated flop. But when I saw it, I knew the MVC refs would fall for the acting job, since they always do. You simply never see such a call made in other conferences.

A good friend of mine who's a Mich St. fan was watching the game. His comment was typical valley game. And I'm like, what? Low scoring? He said, yeah, kinda, but I was talking about the fouls called when no one else would ever call a foul.

I can understand the call at the end of the game as it looked like the SIU guy hit the Creighton guy on the wrist at live speed to me. Replay showed it was a clean block though. Creighton got so lucky.

A top notch ref should be able to tell the difference between the 2 and it was deffinately a block. Just the way the ball went should have told them that much. The ball went almost straight up but if he hits the wrist the ball would have either been closer to the basket or more then likely would have been off to the side of the basket. This shot just went up in the air like a blocked shot. SIU should have won the game and like usual the MVC will say their refs did a great job in calling the game. It seemed amazing in OT when the CU players mulled Mullens and no call but then Stennitt does the Fosberry flop and gets the call. Until the Valley does something about bogus refs we will just become more of the laughing stock of the country.
No wonder the valley isn't taken seriously by other people.

It wouldn't surprise me if a Dana Altman coached team got the benefit of the doubt on some calls. I don't think it is because he has the most years in the Valley.

I have thought for several years that Creighton seems to get a lot of favorable calls toward the end of the game. When was the last time dana Altman got a T in a game; but then why would he when he seems to catch most of the breaks. Last nights game showed exactly what I am talking about when the foul was called on what was a perfectly blocked shot, that game was taken away from SIU and given to Creighton by the officials.

IMO, most charging calls are made because it's the easy way out for an official. Creighton doesn't get any more calls than anyone else.

Of course then we would be complaining that SIU would get all the breaks, Some here have been complaining for years on how physical they play and handchecks etc...that never get called now. Can you imagine what it would be like if the refs let them play?

Well, I dunno. I think the handchecking is out of control in our conference, and could be policed a bit better. I think inside play should be consistently allowed to be a bit more physical. On other other hand, crazy handchecking on the perimeter slows our games down a lot. Then on yet another hand (call me Vishnu) I hate games where they call weird ticky tack things, but let a guy taking a shot get destroyed going to the basket. One thing will be consistent on all hands, we will always have something to complain about as far as refs go.

Also, that WAS just an awful awful call, that helped decide the game.
