DAVID COLLINS YOU'RE A BEAST thread.....

DC...we need another nice game like against ISWho. Grab them boards like you OWN the ball. Create havoc in the lane. Put someone (P'unk Allen) on his arse a time or two.

    Go hard for offensive putbacks.......

WE NEED YOU TO BE BIG.

There's no question of whatever TW told DC it worked and we do need him not just against CU on Saturday but for the rest of his BU career. He has a chance to redeem himself and make a real positive mark on his BU legacy. He has the ability to grab it by the horns and I hope he has the motivation to do it.

When he avoids putting the ball on the floor he usually makes a strong move to the basket, and he has done more of that lately. His turn around shot close to the basket is very steady and has looked better lately also. He has gotten some huge blocks. He has set some good screens. He has simply played stronger close to the basket on offense and stronger on D.

I would not care if he only averages 4 ppg as long as he keeps getting 3-4 blocks/game, 5+ rpg, and not get burned on defense.

Maybe he could see some old films of David "Chainsaw" Winslow.

It is proably very frustrating for David. As a face up 4 forced to play the 5 in a one big offence and then to not have the freedom to make a mistake without getting the quick hook. Most senior players, especially the guards on this team seem to relish that perticular freedom. Shot blockers and 3pt. shooters need to feel relaxed and know that they can have a bad sequence or two and still be alowed to play through it. In many was David more than any other senior is trated like a freshman in that regard. I would suspect that is why he has not progressed as expected. If you are not going to give your senior center 23-25 minutes a game and at least 5 shots a game, how can he be expected to fix his problems?

Well with all due respect there's a difference in just screwing up and just not doing what you are supposed to do. If David does something right but doesn't execute very well I think JL gives him some slack, and has definitely in the past. If he isn't jumping for a rebound or to block a shot...which he is guilty of still (even in the ISU game)...then that's a whole other story and it needs to be pounded into his head that he can't do that...he needs to jump. He's had a year and a half now and JL has given him his fair share of chances. For the most part the last few games he has finally stepped up or at least improved. Now the question is will he be consistent with it or not. If not then you have to wonder how many times can you cut him some slack...he knows what he's supposed to do now; there's no way he doesn't....now it's time for him to prove he can do it. Simple as that.

What slack are you speaking of? Thy guy is leading the Valley in blocks dispite playing two games less than his nearest competition. He is averaging the same amount of points and rebounds and assists ,as Singh plus the nearly two blocks as I mentioned before in just 14 minutes a game. Sam Singh has the same numbers with .75 blocks in close to 18 minutes. Somehow this causes Sam to have praise showered on him ans makes David the scurge of Bradley?
                Be a little realistic.
They both need 23-25minutes agame and 5-6 shots each. This team will not take the next step untill that happens. Simple as that!!!!

I'll take that from DC anytime....

This is so very true. I think DC gets it much worse because it seems like he has potential to be more. I have always appreciated DC, maybe too much I suppose. I think SS is having a great year, but at the end of the day DC gives as good, if not better, minutes, all while being in the system 3 years fewer. DC makes some mental mistakes sometimes, everyone does, his just appear more obvious because he doesn' neccesarily have the coordination to make up for them, not an easy task when you have a long 7-foot frame. DC is an integral part of our success and I don't think people realize how much he and Sam will be missed next year. Our 3 big men will have a combined 1.5 real games of D-I experience next year...

Collins is 7 ft tall and he is NOT a face up 4 if he were he would occasionally be able to put the ball on the court and move to the basket. He is a 5 and is a back to the basket player. I suspect he has not progressed as expected because he is inconsistant. Games like ISU where he is challenged immediately physically but Sampey etc he wanted to come to play, in games like MSU he plays 19 minutes and is 1-4 from the field with 4 boards and did not play with the same intensity he played with v ISU.

He is wildly inconsistant, but he is a much better player when he takes the ball and goes into a move and is decisive, when he tries to create or essentially is not decisive he has some issues, IE putting the ball on the court or taking the ball across the lane instead of going from the block to a shot or to the rim.

On the defensive end he has played very well in the last 2 weeks by creating space between him and the offensive player and using his length to alter shots. I am still not overally pleased with his rebounding but he is doing a much better job of getting his hands on missed shots and atleast tapping those missed shots out.

Honestly, if he played with the passion he showed v ISU there is not one player in this conference who could contain him nightly... he just does not show/play with that same passion, intensity, desire nightly... maybe that is a reason why the praise he has gotted is not equal to Singh but I also suspect many are a little slower to praise because everyone sees the player he can be, seemingly everyone but Collins. Everyone sees a chisled, athletic, soft touched 7 footer who many times playes like he is brand new to basketball, or isnt real interested in the game.

I meant for toughness and hustle... When Winslow set a pick, he meant it. When Winslow got a rebound, he meant it-nobody took the ball from him. When Winslow toughed up on defense, he meant it. Granted, Winslow was not a great player, but he was tough and played hard and THAT is what Collins does not do well.

I understand what you are saying. With regards to the praise...all I can guess is that most of the time it's easier to see heart than statistics. And there's not too many people on the team I bet that has more heart than SS does right now and it's showing. Believe me I'm pleased with David but as somebody else said...the one thing that people really like to see..and is keeping everyone from giving him an IMMENSE amount of praise is when you play to your potential. Like I just said SS for example gets praise because he his laying it out there and that's what he can do with his injury ridden body. DC on the other hand can be so so so so much more than those stats you gave. Off the top of my head, without even having to think for more than a second, I can think of two shots that he could've blocked by jumping a mere 2 inches...maybe even just by getting on his toes...maybe just by standing up straight. Honestly, he had his hands in King O's face coming from a screen and the shots went right over his hands. The two shots were almost identical. I can think of 3 times where he could've gotten a rebound pretty easily and he did not. That's the "slack" I was referring to. He does things right and puts himself in the position to do it right but...doesn't quite finish it off or execute well and yet JL kept him in.

He's got a higher ceiling than where he is at right now. Over the past year and a half he has stayed in after missing a rebound or having one taken away from him by a 5-11 guard that slaps him or by not blocking out or by not jumping or by setting a moving screen. That's "slack". But now he is improving and that's good..he's our starter he should have BETTER stats than SS and he'll get there if he keeps learning and trying each game consistently. He's a good guy and a good player.

Starter is really a relative term. He does get announced at the beginning of the game, but right now SS is averaging 2 more mintues per game, so who's the starter?
