  • JL and Valley Refs

I didn't see it mentioned much in the post game thread so I thought I would bring it up.

It has been brought up about JL having a rep with the refs in the conference. I don't know that I have ever seen all three refs tell Jim to calm down 3-4 minutes into the game. One of the guys was across the floor. Each one had either made a motion with their hands or told him to quit early into the game.
I think it's Jim's nature to look at each and every call so he reacts accordingly but I don't think it helps him much.

In comparison the only time in the first half I saw Jank really talk to a ref was during a throw in opposite side of the floor and him and the ref were both looking straight ahead and talking. It didn't look like he was yelling...

Some other coaches may have been screaming about foul situation(I don't think they had a beef) but some would have been crying at 7-1

Just wondering if anyone noticed this last night. Where I sit I tend to watch the coaches as much as the game and how they react to officals and their players.

I laugh when I hear officials talk about how they allow some coaches to get away with more than others, because they know some coaches always berate refs and use profanity, so they'll let it go. But when a coach like Jim Molinari showed the slightest emotion in questioning a call (neither Jim Molinari or Jim Les has ever used profanity or denigrated the referee personally, that I know of) they get a technical. Yet Larry Eustachy used more potty mouth cuss words and berated the officials constantly and didn't get a technical.

IMO, they simply need to be consistent in dealing with coaches or making calls.

I am curious if Coach Les is different on the road. When I see a calmer coach at Carver, I wonder if they are more verbal in their own house.

I see a lot of college coaches complain to refs all over on the tv. I don't think Coach Les is alone in that respect.

It's hard not to react when the ref signals it's BU's ball, then gives it to ISU after the timeout. It's also not a disparity worth griping about when your team is chucking 30 foot 3's fading away from the basket and not driving but a handful of times the entire half!

I agree with you. ISU did nothing to try and pick up fouls but many coaches would still try to use the 7-1 disparity in their complaining.

I don't know that I've ever seen all three refs somewhat warn a coach only 3 or 4 minutes into a game before and I thought it was odd

We had the technicals last year - right? And they KNOW this is a big rivalry. And they KNOW what is on the line with this game. Maybe, just maybe.... they didn't want anything to get out of control and so they put out warnings early.

For whatever reason it appears as though some of the refs are tired of Coach Les's chirping. Maybe I am seeing it wrong, but it doesn't take very long for the refs to give Coach the hands up signal of that is enough. I think he has brought this on himself. He might be wise to change the perception. I remember last year in South Padre that 1 ref had a discussion with Merfeld even before the game started and sure enough that ref gave Coach Les a T in the Vandy game. You can say that it is the officials fault and they should pay more attention to the game or other coaches do it, but I think Coach Les is not fondly thought of by the refs for his actions on the sidelines.

And I don't think he is alone among the coaches out there.

I agree. Just saying it is not the best place to be, on the wrong side of the law so to speak.

Last night's crew is the MVC's top crew, or at least one of them. Some people complain about them, but the crew with Higgins and Sanzere call a good game. They let the guys play, usually don't call too many ticky-tack fouls, and from what I have seen from the crew, let the players decide the game. Some of their past high-profile BU games that immediately come to mind are BU-ISU last year at Carver, and BU-SIU in St. Louis the NIT year. Both games were physical, both games were called fairly, and both games were decided by the players on the court. That's all you can really ask of an official. You'll see the same crew with Higgins and Sanzere do a lot of TV games for a lot of BCS conferences. I'll take them any day over Gerry Pollard and Dave Draucker.

You think the refs care if there were T's last year?

I agree they know it's a rivalry but there was nothing to hint their would be a control problem 3-4 minutes in to the game.
This is only a big game to BU and ISU at this time of the season and the refs or the rest of the country really don't care about it.

Heck I didn't think JL had done all that much to that point and that's why I brought it up when all three had warned him so early

And add to that crew last night was JD. He was the Head Official for last night's game. Someone commented how he hadn't been in Peoria in a very long time and how he has been doing a lot of BCS games.

Pollard was doing the CU-NIU game last night, LUCKY for us! I wonder how the CU folks felt about the reffing last night. Reffs who want to be part of the spectacle are usually the worst ones. Last night though not perfect for the most part as BB pointed out let the game be decided by the players and that is all I ever ask for. Refs are humans and will make mistakes but when they have an ego problem on the floor then that is when there are huge problems.

I agree wholeheartedly. Every game I have seen that crew call, that appears to be the case. Win (ISU '08, ISU '09) or lose (SIU Arch Madness '07), no complaints here.
