I've never heard the singing either...

lol. A year or two ago when I was able to attend games in Peoria, I remember the mikes being close to either cheerleaders or the band. During the opposing team's free-throws, they would let out this loud screech like the Ring-Wraiths from Lord of the Rings. It was annoying. So, it was good for us!

However, I actually don't think this should be done. I mean, if you've got 10,000+ people there, that should be noise enough. Using microphones to enhance anything is artificial.

I've always thought it was miked for the benefit of the fans in the upper bowl (so they could hear the band). I don't really notice it when I sit in the lower bowl, so I've always doubted that the actual overall volume of noise is increased from the player's perspective on the court.

At least we aren't swearing and/or accusing the players of publicly inappropriate sexual acts. I think they let you use microphones if you have some semblance of class. (I can vaguely hear ISU readers flipping their dictionaries to 'semblance').

I sit in Sec. 22--upper bowl. My only complaint is that Paul Herzog's voice sounds muffled. You cannot understand what he is saying.

As far as sound bleeding into microphones, that's normal...that is the way they work. Cheerleaders, fans and others will be heard.
