  • Another recruit bails at Evansville--per KU board

There are reports on the KU board about Evansville's top incoming recruit for this fall, JD Christie.....that he has changed his mind and will not enroll at Evansville. He has reportedly enrolled at Kansas.
He is from Shawnee Mission, Kansas and may walk on at KU.
He would be eligible to play right away but could not get a scholarship because he is not honoring his LOI.

Why do you think that is?
Shouldn't they be able to compete at the same level as Creighton, Xavier, BU, or St. Louis? (all similar sized private schools)

        No Excuse

There is no excuse for Evansville's "suckiness". They are in and surrounded by states rich in basketball tradition with a plethora of talent to choose from. The only reason for their tradition of suckiness is poor leadership from the top down. Many institutions have found that things can be turned around in a hurry when the right leaders are in place. Now, it could also be that the top leadership (President and Board) of that university does not put a priority on sports. Why, I don't know. They're not exactly a Harvard, Yale, etc. Heck, they're nowhere near BU, CU, or DU academically

          Nice word, "suckiness"
They averaged 6000 per game last year, but take away the one home game they hosted Purdue (probably many of the 11,700 were PU fans), then the avg. drops to about 5400.
Their fan base must be very frustrated.
I wish they had a message board so we could know what they think.

I thought Evansville was supposed to be improving, maybe finishing 5th or 6th this year, but how many recruits have bailed on them now?

1998-99 Evansville won the MVC at 13-5. The MVC was the 8th best conference that year in the RPI and Evansville was 44 in the RPI with a SOS of 98.

They got an 11 seed with an at-large bid losing 1st round to 6th seed Kansas.

That year Creighton won the MVC tourney. SMS got an at-large bid. Creighton (as a 10 seed) beat Louisville before losing to Maryland. SMS (as a 12 seed) beat Wisky 43-31 and then Tenn 81-51 before losing to tourney runner-up Duke.

                edit:
Btw, that was the year Bradley lost 1st round in the NIT at home to Butler.

It's a shame they can't get their act together, maybe Merfield is the problem? How many years ago did he take over? Was it right after that win over Iowa State in the tourney when he was coaching Hampton?

NOW it is confirmed, that the top Evansville recruit, JD Christie
has renegged on his LOI and has left Evansville.
He will enroll at Kansas, but the article says he is "burned out" on basketball and is not presently planning to walk on.
                    I suspect he will reconsider.
J.D. Christie, a first-team all-state basketball player out of Shawnee Mission East who signed a letter-of-intent with the University of Evansville in April, has left the Indiana school and decided to enroll at Kansas University. The 6-foot-6 Christie, who averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds a game for state-runner-up SM East and was not recruited […]
