  • Former Central Illinois Player Doing Very Well At Out Of State Low Major

The stats I've been seeing from this kid makes me wonder if we ever recruited him:

Spencer Johnson is a 2006 graduate from Champaign Central High School. He played AAU with Team Illinois (Dodie Dunson's father's team) and spent one year at prep school at Laurinburg Prep. He's a 6'6" 200 lbs combo forward and is currently averaging 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds at UMKC.

He didn't have a great game against us but he only played ten minutes. However, in the last five games he's averaging 18.2 points and 12 rebounds in 34.2 minutes per game. He's had five consecutive double-doubles including 22 points and 12 rebounds on (whom some consider to be the top team in the state) Northwestern.

I'd say Johnson was a big miss for all the in-state schools, considering he is just a sophomore.

When Johnson was in high school at Champaign Central he got very little attention, and I suspect he must have had grade issues or academic issues.
Despite that it says midstatehoops had the kid ranked, I don't recall anyone else ranking him, and one other service whose older rankings are still up online didn't have him inside their top-30.
Neither scout.com nor Rivals even had or have him listed in their database, so I would say this is one kid who definitely helped his stock with the year at prep school.

had BU been interested and gone for the kid, then I suspect we would have had to pull the offer from Theron Wilson to land him, so I'd say it probably just wasn't to be at BU.
