  • Odds of Making it in Pro Basketball

Doesn't every kid grow up thinking they have a reasonable shot at being the next superstar or making a decent living in professional basketball.
And I like that, every kid should dream of it or shoot for it....but what are the odds.......?

I ran across a little bit of statistics on the likelihood of becoming a millionaire through various endeavors............

    Here are some thoughts...........

-THERE ARE ROUGHLY 6 billion people in the world.
-there are roughly 2.9 million millionaires in North America, 2.8 million millionaires in Europe, and 2.4 million millionaires in Asia.
-there are roughly 9-10 million millionaires in the world.

--thus the odds of a person becoming a millionaire through any endeavor are 10 million in 6 billion, or roughly 1 in 600, 0.16%.

--the odds of a person becoming a millionaire through gaining an education and working hard is roughtly half of that (the other half of the millionaires inherited or received their money through other means)...1 in 1200, or 0.08%

--the number of people who are believed to be milionaires via playing professional basketball is not too hard to calculate roughly, as it cetrainly is less than 10,000 people worldwide but perhaps no more than 2-3000 and maybe fewer.
Thus the likelihood is less than 10000 in 6 billion, or 1 in 600,000, or less than0.00016%.

so it looks like even if you have the basketball skills, it would serve college kids well to keep up their acadcemics!!

T what is the percent of kids making it from HS/College to the NBA? Only a handful or 2 at the most make it every year into the NBA and not all are US college students. That is the number I'd be preaching to those kids in HS with the handlers.

In DI there are 340+ teams and each one has 13 kids on scholarship (roughly).
so at any time in DI there are about 5000 DI kids plus a few from DII, etc. that might have a theoretic shot at making it to the NBA.
This entire number turns over every four years yet only about 50-60 new players enter the NBA each year, many of which are Euros.
Thus of the 5000 US kids playing college ball, only 200-250 from that batch land in the NBA,
so a rough odds of one in every 20-30 college kids have a shot at the NBA.

Are you talking about developmental league because not even 20 kids from college make a NBA teams?
