  • More Mid-Season Transfers

Another one today the second recently from UW-GB - the wording makes it sound like he's being booted for some violations...
"Green Bay basketball demands that players be responsible and accountable..
Chop has struggled to understand and meet those expectations"

here's a list of a lot of them including Hamga (UNLV), Withey (Arizona), Ruben Cotto (Saint Louis), Derrion Hobbs (Missouri State), and Stinson (Indiana State)

Is there any statistics on Freshmen leaving mid-season or for that fact end of the season for the past 20 years. I wonder if this is a trend or if it has been happening for quite some time.

UWGB (and the city of Green Bay for that matter) is very conservative and they do not put up with much BS. Not surprised...

Another mid-year transfer that isn't on that list is Johnny Coy, 6-7 guard from Arizona State. Several MVC schools were looking at him before he signed with ASU, and Drake HC Mark Phelps is the guy who recruited him to ASU.

There are....I saw a study by NCAA showing that in basketball 30-33% of all D-I scholarship players leave the first place they go and transfer elsewhere, and that's way up from the numbers of past decades.
I don't know if I have seen stats on freshmen only but I have to believe that since the possibility of making a living playing basketball is so much greater today even for non-"stars", that there is more urgency to get to a place where you can get some court time and generate statistics.
Obviously most of these transfers are not kids who believe they have a high chance of being in the NBA, but they do want to play pro ball somewhere.

*** basketball requires a one year penalty with the transfer sitting out, but some sports don't allowing players to transfer and be eligible immediately, and thus even more athletes transfer in some of those sports.
