  • Numbers that are tough to stomach

    Team numbers

    BU's team FG% - .429
    BU's team 3-point FG% - .296
    BU's team FT% - .681
    BU's assist/turnovers - 119/147
    BU opponent's 3-point FG% - .384
    BU opponent's PPG - 69.8

    Individual numbers

    Theron Wilson's 3-point FG% - .222 - Why does he continue to shoot them?
Theron Wilson's FT % - .696 - Not good. He gets there so often it should be better.
    Sam Maniscalco's 3-point FG% - .267 - Hopefully this goes up as he plays more 2 guard.
    Sam Maniscalco's FT% - .704 - This needs to be better.
    Eddren McCain's FT% - .474 - Beyond terrible.
    Taylor Brown's 3-point FG% - .10 - Why does he continue to launch them?
    Taylor Brown's FT% - .476 - See comment for McCain.
    Darian Norris's FG% - .294 - See comment for Sam.

These are some absolutely woeful offensive numbers, and our defense of the 3 is bad as well. Hopefully one thing we have learned through 9 games is that we're not a good perimeter shooting team. Shooting 25 3's a game is not a good idea for a team that can't shoot. I thought it looked like we made a much stronger effort to work the ball inside than we have all year. I hope that it continues.

I can't comment on many numbers, but you gotta remember that Edge started the season 1 for 8 from the line and then he finally got his shot going and has been knocking them down at about a 78% clip since then or close to that number.

Other than that, most of Darian's shots have been 3's which are incorporated into the overall FG% stats...his will certainly get better as today showed...

Ditto on Sammy as I think he will get better w/ more rest and playing the 2 guard more...

I agree 100% on Theron not shooting 3's anymore and I agree on our very poor 3-pt defense and that something really needs to change there still....

Finally, did it seem like we handled the ball better when Eddren was in? It seemed like we had a better team flow when he was in, and especially when Darian was in with him.

We're going to have a solid squad next year and god forbid anyone gets injured, we'll be the team to beat in 2010-11.

The number that makes me sick the most is our team ft shooting... Nothing like giving away points, and we need to get this fixed pronto... Shoot ft's till your arms fall off.

Forget about the numbers...I can live with them if we are playing hard for the 40 minutes, every game. It is not if we win or lose but the effort our guys give. Are they looking at their weakness and practicing a bit harder to over come them? I believe they are trying but I also believe JL can get another gear from them.

That is all one big huge Fallicy.

Seriously I am in the camp of please just play hard for 40 minutes, give a full game effort and good things will happen.

Since we have serious issues with our jump shooting to me the best way to solve that is to play pressure defense and give yourself easy scoring opportunities. Then again if you pressure and take the ball more to the basket, you generally will create foul shots and this team is equally bad at shooting free throws.

I think we are more likely to shoot better from the free throw line then the 3 pt line. But when we play so many "guards" who are small but can get into the lane but have no ability to finish I guess we will have to continue to be a jump shooting team... that is also going to have to continue since we get very little inside scoring from our post players.

Bad shooting and bad interior play along with real spotty defense is not exactly a recipe for much success.

if you look at just the past SIX games, Eddren McCain is 8-11 from the FT line
and 6-11 from 3 pt range
              ...

just how much better is he expected to get...
maybe let's encourage the kid instead of trying to criticize!!

Over the past two games, Sam Maniscalco is 5-8 from the 3-pt line.

and almost all those stats are improving over recent games, so what more are these guys expected to do?

                Theron

I, for one, am not ready to tell TW to stop shooting 3s. Yes, he's been bad so far this year, but last year he shot 41.2%. By comparison, JC (while shooting many more) was 39.9% and AW was 40.6%. I don't think TW should be looking to launch 3's constantly, but if he's got an open look, he should take it. Also, if the defense is forced to try to take the 3 away from him, that makes it easier for him to do what he does best-drive to the hoop and get to the FT line.

Completely agree here. Theron should continue to shoot. If he doesnt then people are just going to continue to lay off him because they know he will just drives to the basket and try to score that way. If they think he is a threat, he can at least try to drive past the close defender. He was our best 3 point shooter last year percentage wise so I see no reason why he should stop shooting.

I dont know Taylor Brown's HS stats but I bet with his atheltic frame that he did not spend much time outside the 3 point line and got most of his points around the basket so I will agree with you here that the mid range game is where he should be focusing

Everyone needs to keep shooting the three. Our offense is built on hitting three point shots to open up driving lanes. How are we going to score if we dont shoot the three? Unfortunately the combination of losing Warren and the three point line moving back has made it alot harder for our team to hit them.

I also agree on Theron. He shot from 3 pretty well last year, but this year he hasn't looked confident most of the time. I think it's a pretty important part of his game, so I hope he can turn it around.

Also, regarding Brown's 3 pt shot... He has a very nice looking jumper, so it may come around for him. Depending on which position he'll be playing, I'd like to see it develop for him.

Totally disagree. As long as TW launches those high arching 3 point attempts, then he should lay off the threes... someone on the staff needs to work with TW on this... It is the main reason his 3 point percentage is down this year. Also, TB needs to work on the three as well as the mid range game in practice to make him a more all around player. TB has time to improve on this and I am confidant he will do so.

I agree, he should shoot the 3. Yesterday to enforce what you have said above teams laying off him, in the second half he gave up a wide open 3 from the corner by the BU bench. Then the next time down he was wide open again from the same corner as they backed off again. This time he shot the ball, unfortunately it went over the rim and hit nothing but air. But the point is until we have a better inside game, there will be open 3's to shoot and if open, let it fly. You don't give up open shots and you don't get better at shooting them if you pass it up. Unless you pass it for a better wide open shot.
There is no team in the the MVC that can match up to us the whole game, if our bigs come to play! BU will win the the MVC this year!

Fine. Let's just keep chucking up 3's at a 20% clip and see how many games we win. With no post presence to keep the defense honest, and a line that's a foot farther than it was last year, it sounds like a great idea.

Its not a great idea but how can you run a four guard offense without shooting threes? If we stop shooting threes and dont have a post up threat how should we score?
