Any thoughts on the officials?

I thought that crew was very good. They did not try to overuse their whistles. What a pleasure it is to watch a game without so many foul calls. Today's officials didn't act like they felt they needed to be the show.

The only call I thought was bogus was the technical for hanging on the rim by Theron. He was fouled hard on the play, and I don't believe I have ever seen a technical foul called when a guy is fouled like that. And he didn't actually hang on the rim very long. The rule allows for the player to hang if he needs to avoid coming down awkwardly or injuring someone.

No, nothing is fine. That was the worst team we will play all season (although SIU-E may be right there with them). We should have beaten them by 30. I still don't know what we're doing on offense, and I don't know who should or should not be playing. I have an idea, but no definitive answer. Jim is really going to earn his paycheck this year if he can figure this mess out.

Oh...and we can't go a game without someone getting hurt. For the love of God!

You are right that the word awkwardly does not appear in the rule, but it is considered by the refs. In fact, your words "avoid landing on a player underneath" don't appear in the rule, either.

Here is the NCAA rule with the exact wording--

Section 3. Hanging/Grasping on the Ring

Players should not be permitted to hang on or grasp the basket ring in an
excessive, emphatic manner during dunks when there is no possibility of a
resulting injury occurring. The intent of the rule does not permit a player
to hold the ring and lift his or her body or legs, or in general, hang on or
grasp the ring for emphasis. This is especially true for a player who dunks

the ball on a breakaway or when no defender is nearby. Injuries, sometimes
serious, can occur as a result of grasping/hanging on the ring. Game delays
also result when damaged equipment must be fixed or replaced. When there
is no obvious injury circumstance to be avoided by grasping/hanging on the
ring, doing so in an emphatic matter is a (Men) CLASS B and (Women)

Player/Substitute technical foul.

Art. 3. Technical Fouls.....

c. (MEN) CLASS A and CLASS B technical fouls. A CLASS A
technical foul involves unsportsmanlike conduct or behavior by a
player, substitute, coach or bench personnel. A CLASS B technical
foul is an infraction of the rules that neither involves contact with an
opponent nor causes contact with an opponent and falls below the
limit of an unsportsmanlike act. Examples of CLASS A and CLASS
B technical fouls shall include:
1. Unsportsmanlike conduct; using profanity, vulgarity, taunting,
baiting (CLASS A);
2. Requesting an excessive timeout (CLASS B); and
3. Hanging on the ring, except when doing so to prevent an injury
(CLASS B).

So it's states very simply that the exception is when doing so to prevent injury. That includes injury to the player doing the hanging, or to anyone else.

I am not sure I agree on the officials, maybe over all, BUT. As I thought the T on TW wasn't right as, he was in the act of shooting and was fouled. In that case a player is just protecting himself from the fall. You see that a lot and no T is called
The biggest miss by the officials was the elbow by Williams which from my seat straight behind SS back, to me, was deliberate and should of been called as such. Before that play on two other processions in the same spot Williams tried to turn right and move to the hoop on the baseline and Sam had him pushed almost into the stands under the basket. The second time Williams was called for stepping on the line. The third time, in the same spot after receiving the pass he threw the right elbow high into Sam face before going baseline again. Should of been called and Williams GONE

On a side note, what happened to that guy just before halftime near section 20? I saw everyone looking up that way and I turned around just in time to see them carrying him into the corridor. Then saw the medics wheeling the stretcher in a couple minutes later during halftime.

I can believe it was for that instead of the "hanging on the rim" rule. Maybe the interpretation got confused in transmitting the ruling to the scorer's table. Although it's hard to believe that since the officials were at the scorer's table for a long time, and the PA guy is right there.

All I heard was the T had to be called when he (TW) slapped it with 2 hands. I didn't know what that meant, what he slapped, and didn't ask. The officials were communicating info first that the basket counted, then a foul, then a technical called by a different official... all this was told to the Official Scorer, which they then had to describe whether it was a type A or type B technical (this case a B so no personal foul or team foul counted against Wilson and Bradley). All this was told to the Official Scorer which btw - is usually 2-4 seats away from the PA and doesn't hear what is said - so the PA makes some assumptions, some being errors from time to time.

AT got some time, certainly has energy, almost a little too manic out there. Still, he runs the floor very well for a big man. Getting him time now will help him in the future.

He is so smooth running the court and so long, I really think the sky is the limit as far as what he can be, especially defensively. I want him getting big minutes the rest of the year.

I still say we should be able to see AT and DC at the same time.

I would like to see DC getting the basket further from the rim and taking 10-15' shots. He has a good shot and should be used more like a 4 in a true offensive set. Just because he is a 7' does not mean he is a center. You ned a little bit more toughness as a 5 and DC just does not have that in him.

AT on the O should be around the basket only and please keep him from setting screens up top, he's just not big enough to make that much of a difference.

So have DC set the screens step towards the basket for a high pass ans then the shot. He did hit a few from inside the key last year during the CBI. We have not run any of those plays and I ma wondering if JL is keeping a few plays for conference play.

When I saw him down in the section below me I ran down to help. They were carting him off to find a flat surface. I backed off when it appeared he was in good hands. Hats off to the PCC who had a nurse and called 911 very quickly.

I was impressed with how they handled the entire situation. It appeared as if it was a cardiac problem as they had his shirt open and looked as though they were doing CPR.

Again I stepped away when I saw they had it under control.

He was given an IV and taken away after about 20 minutes......I hope and pray he was/is OK.

Again EXCELLENT job by those standing by AND the PCC.

Just before they wheeled him off, he was sitting half way in a up right position on the cart. He was wearing a oxygen mask and appeared to be conscious. I felt bad as his wife was there by his side watching them work on him. I to thought it was an excellent job to get the guy out of the seating area and to a area where they could go to work on him. I to hope for the best for him and his family.

I am glad BU won. I liked the intensity on defense to start the game. Thought it relaxed after the big lead was gotten. Outside shooting is an issue for this team right now. I think BU has some good freshman, but they need time and experience. I actually saw some good block outs on rebounding, TW crashed for the boards, and TW actually fake pumped under the basket and got the defense in the air before going up to lay it in......woohooooooooo!

I have a question that some of the smarter basketball minds can answer. I notice that most of the time when the bigs set a screen out towards the top, they roll the opposite way that I learned decades ago. They do not roll where they can always see the man with the ball. Why is this?

Singh appeared to have a couple stitches put in the bridge of his nose when he went to the lockerroom.
He caught an elbow and had a gash and was bleeding.
He came back out and sat the rest of the first half, word was he felt a little dizzy.
He did not come back out in the 2nd half until only about 10 min. left but still didn't play.
He will be fine by next game.
