  • "The Weave"

    Get rid of it!!!!!!!

I admit that when we hit our 3-pointers and can get open due to the weave, it's ok to use every now and then... but tonight was a horrible example of why we can't stick to just the 3-man motion offense!

I hate seeing Collins get the ball at the point! Use his height!

If we want AT to be good, give him more playing time! That's the only way he'll gain experience AND confidence!

And lastly... I learned how to set a proper screen back in biddy basketball when I was 6... why does it seem that we always have fouls due to moving screens this year??? maybe it's just me, but that's what I've been noticing.

The weave isn't the problem. Jim's been running it since he's been here, and several other college teams run it. Players make a big difference.

The weave isnt the problem, we have had success with it the past two years

but in those two years we also had a player who could get to the basket off cutting off the weave to the basket in D Ruff and a knockdown shooter who could also cut it to get to the hoop in Crouch

Franklin also excelled from the weave

Our players never cut it they just follow the 3 point line and never attack the basket and i think it is frustrating

To run the weave you can just keep weaving till there is 8 seconds left on the shot clock, it is supposed to keep the perimeter defenders off balance and attack at an opportune time.
Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

I think there was one illegal screen called in the 2nd 1/2 - I could be wrong.

I noticed in the Mich St game and in tonight's game - DC has been SETTING proper screens. Now maybe nobody gets screened, but at least DC sets himself, doesn't move, players move around him and then he goes to another spot on the floor. I think he has improved quite a bit with that since a few games ago.

I understand that the players have to ultimately buy into the system and make everything work... but when this isn't working for this group of players, maybe it's time to try something else - like actual plays drawn up on the dry-erase board?

I was talking to some people after the game and they were amazed at how well Butler played as a 'team'... not saying that we don't, but just looking at how they were able to dish the ball around our man and zone defenses with such ease and find the open man almost every time...

ultimately it's all about how the players AND coaches adapt to that game in hand... if the weave works - use it... if not, don't keep throwing up shots and get the ball into the paint to our bigs

This team has now played 10 games. Either teach them how to run the offense that seems to be set in stone here or get imaginative and come up with something else to fit the players that are playing!

Ok then say it for what it is...

If the play design isn't flawed, then we're just too slow and too poor a ball-handler to execute part A and we don't have anyone that is consistent enough or gets enough PT to fill part B

Along with that, I am going to diagree on its use because some times when you hit the middle of the court, you can in fact go back to the side you came from and overload that area by catching the defense moving the other way...

We don't do ANY of that...we just continue our dribbling w/ our heads down from left to right and right to left, never stopping and going back to the same side...and anyone who knows a little about gravity, its easier for defenders to continue sliding to one side then to have to re-direct back the other way quickly...

In all honesty, the team we played tonight played better and was coached much better in every facet of the game...just look at the ball movement...the ball hardly touched the floor in their offense...while we on the other hand dribbled at times for 25-27 seconds of the clock.

I don't have a problem with the weave. It has served us well.

The problem is that we are not quite as good a ball handling/passing team this year. We are also younger.

So what needs to happen is we need to be given a strategy that better suits our available personnel and slowing the tempo down.

Thats because not only does Coach Stevens recruit players to fit his style, but he also works from Day 1 in practice to get plays and an offense that works w/in his players' strengths as well...

Something that maybe we could learn from...

That and passing the ball instead of dribbling...

Dribbling is what that game w/ the cones during the officials timeout is for...

Oh, and it seemed to me that AT didn't have any problem passing the ball from out of the post...good crisp pass and just the fact that he passed the ball makes him better than our supposed starter.

With this team and the poor shooting I hate the weave. I like it when we run the flex and are able to pass it close to the rim. I also did not like our zone today! I wish we would run a match up zone but without a big man to defend the lane it makes it pretty hard to run an agressive zone.

I guess there's a lot of insanity in Peoria and around Bradley basketball because the interest in the program has soared since Les arrived!!!

And by the way SaintLouisBrave, do you have anything good to say about the program. I'd bet 90% of your posts RIP somebody on this team! If it's not Les it's one or more of the players. I'd say if the team makes you this frustrated and unhappy that maybe, just maybe, you should find a Pro team to root for. That way you can REALLY rip the players since they're getting paid!

Our zone would be ok at times, but we seem to always sag off the wrong man (i.e. the shooter) and double the PG who doesn't shoot the 3...

The other issue is that you can't exactly play zone against a team w/ 6-3, 6-4, and 6-5 shooters when you play two guards at a time that are 6-0 or under...they will just take the ball and shoot it right over you...

Just look at the last shot of the 1st half last night...

They iso'd Sam M. and he ended up on a much bigger guy and he ran at him to defend, but the guy shot right over him...

We can still play a 2-3 BUT if the other squad has big guards, we have to adjust and play both Dodie and Chris in the backcourt...its just as simple as that...

And me being someone who discussed the 1-3-1 early in the year...we absolutely can not play that D w/o Will and barely could then...the principles are all wrong and we should just scrap that and never use it again.
