  • 2 MVC teams playing Tuesday, 12/9

2 games involving MVC teams Tuesday, 12/9--

Northern Iowa (5-3) plays a big intra-state rival Iowa (7-2), at Iowa, at 6:00 pm CST. Iowa will e without their leading scorer freshman Anthony Tucker, who was suspended for a team-rules violation.

Apparently, Tucker was found unconscious outside a bar around 1 am Sunday morning. He is only 19 years old. Reports are he was taken to a hospital, and released. An arrest warrant was finally issued Monday morning.

Drake (6-2) plays at in-state rival Iowa State (6-1) at 8:00 pm CST.
Drake clobbered Iowa State 79-44 last year, but the Cyclones are 2 1/2 point favorites this year.

Iowa's freshman Anthony Tucker was immediately suspended by Iowa coach Lickliter.
None of this crap about letting the system play itself out or dealing with the discipline internally without any suspension as some MVC coaches do.
In fact, one MVC player was found by police passed out behind the wheel of a car that was running, and then later that same guy was arrested for driving on the suspended license, and yet he still was never disciplined.
I admire the Iowa response, as the facts were quite clear from the beginning, that Tucker was drinking at the bar and was found outside unconscious, and taken by ambulance to the hospital.
He should be fine, and will have likely learned a valuable lesson when he is reinstated, but I admire that Lickliter took an immediate and solid stance on this behavior.
The cases at Iowa State (Michael Taylor), UNI (O'Rear), ISU (Sampay), and even SIU (Tatum, Foster, etc.) showed that some coaches just ignore the arrests until the press calls them out on it, and then some still never discipline their players

One of Lickliter's players last year was also cited for public Intoxication, Dan Bohall. Lickliter suspended him 6 games, and made comments about how he will handle alcohol related issues sternly.
Tucker, a freshman, is Iowa's leading scorer, and Bohall was not a very important player for him last year (only averaged 2.8 ppg and is no oonger with the team). But, I suspect he will be consistent this year with a long suspension.

Do you consider it to be a different situation, in regards to punishment, when it is in season vs. out of season?

most athletic codes at most schools don't make a distinction...
(and you'll see those kids who were nabbed at BU recently will serve suspensions even though most were athetes in sports that are not presently in season)
In fact, maybe you didn't notice, that even high schools have stricter athlatic codes than what we saw at ISU...
Jim Molinari's own son was suspended for the first 4 games of his high school season for a relatively minor code vioaltion that happened over the summer, which he voluntarily self-reported.

What about athletes that get an underage drinking ticket (or something close to that, not 100% sure), play the following day in a key home game, then get suspended after the administration tells the coach to do so?

much, much lesser of a violation, but if you are referring to the BU case, the players were still disciplined...one losing a start and the other NOT playnig at all.
Many times, violations this minor in nature don't even make it to the press, so we have no idea how much of this is going on at ISU knowing now how the press there protects the players by not making any mention until we call them out on the message boards.
ISU's campus "Police Beat" shows plenty of drug cases and underage drinking at ISU that never makes the press.

I'm confused as to how that equates to a passed out drunk behind the wheel of a car who if I recall correctly at the time was working on his 2nd DUI....

Considering the history of IsU athletes getting DUIs, some while underaged, and not missing a single minute of playing time, I would think an ISU fan should be questioning the coach's discipline at ISU, not Bradley.
Every case at Bradley, even the less serious ones like TW and TCS's underaged ticket were punished with some sort of discipline, and loss of game time.

Well while I agree that the degree of crimes are not the same, IIRC, in that previous BU case, there was underage athlete who was driving with alcohol in his system. Which is considered "0 tolerance", since he was underage.

I am pretty sure you can actually get a MORE severe penatly for 0 tolerance underage driving, even if not at DUI level, then an actual DUI. That is just from the experience of some of my friends in high school. I am sure every case is different, but I had 2 friends in high school who lost their license until they were 21 for getting a 0 tolerance, underage, driving, ticket. And there BAC was not over 0.08.

I don't think he was driving. I think Matt Salley was, IIRC.

no way...Matt Salley was never even cited....was of legal age should he have decided to drink and had no DUI.

Recall only after nearly a month of hiding Sampay's DUI from the press, once it was being talked about on the message boards, Jankovich made a bold statement to the press that Sampay would be
"immediately and indefinitely suspended from all team-related activities".

Funny thing, though, like the very next day, ISU started their fall "boot camp" and Sampay was filmed participating with all the other players just as if there was going to be no discipline at all.
Shortly thereafter, Jank said he wasn't going to discipline Sampay at all.

Do you have a link to back this up. I am pretty sure with both Sampay and Dyer, he stated that punishments were handled in-house. Do you really cosider that "not being disciplined"??

You are the known for ALWAYS backing up sources and comments with links... so could I please see the one that says "I am not going to discipline Sampay at all." Me thinks you may have exaggerated a little or made that up since there was no link originally provided... but I will be happy to eat some crow if it is provided...

That was actually my point. I may be mixing news stories, but I thought the two cited underage drinkers were in a car driven by Matt Salley (who being of age wasn't cited for anything, if he'd had a drink). I remember Matt being connected to something like this, and in my brain it was this same instance, but maybe I'm mixing stories like I said.

No that is correct T. I believe Salley was driving and TCS and Theron were riding along. They were not operating a motor vehicle, so their offense is nothing compared to a DUI.
