  • Bloomington HS head coach

Didn't see this posted, but the Bloomington HS head basketball coaching position has been open since Ron Rose left to take the head spot at Illinois Wesleyan.
BHS had been interviewing and has now selected their next head coachj.

They have promoted freshman coach Jamie Codron to the varsity head coaching spot.

Jamie Codrom's wife is the head girls basketball coach at Pekin.

Hey, I have a question for anyone with a bit of knowledge of Washington HS.
Someone on the Bloomington message board made reference to a 6'10" kid at Washington. Are they talking about Scott who will be a senior or someone else who'll be varsity this season?

Very interesting, as Bloomington HS is one of the top programs in the state, and I would have expected them to hire someone with varsity head coaching experience.
Freshman coaches for the most part do not have much chance to coach the talented kids at the school, as they go right to varsity and JV.
At many of the summer events, Codron was nowhere around and varsity assistant Rob Behrens was coaching them.
    Behrens is originally from Tremont.

I just read that Roanoke-Benson head basketball coach Matt Gordon has left R-B and will go to work asassistant principal at
Eureka and become an assistant varsity coach at Eureka.
Gordon is also a Bloomington HS grad and I wonder if he was a candidate for that job.

This is all just word of mouth stuff, so take it for what it's worth. I heard that Rose was on his way out last year and that they had all but told Codron he had the job then. There was then a decision for Ron to come back one more year and the offer to Codron was taken from the table.

As an outsider looking in, BHS has a ton of talent but nooo discipline. I saw them play 4 times last year and all but once they squandered a big lead because they started to play "me" ball instead of b-ball.

I think the first order for Coach Codron should be to set up some hard and fast rules correlating attitude and teamwork with playing time. Talent without discipline is wasted talent. Look how many times a more talented team out of the CPL will get it handed to them by a disciplined, well coached team without all the bluechippers from downstate.

Rumor has it that Rose was overheard at the Richwoods shootout commenting on how undiscipilined the BHS team appeared to be. Hello, coach Rose, those were your kids and a reflection on you, because at that moment they had no true coach.

Others can disagree, just my 2 cents.

          Bingo, I agree.
My kids have played summer ball for several years against the BHS kids (since Bocot was in 6th grade), and we noticed it with regularity. Tremendous talent but showboat and playground stuff.
All it takes is one ball hog and then the rest of the kids start thinking "unless I get a little more selfish, then nobody will ever notice me..."

All you have to do is note that for the past several years they have never been without at least 2 or 3 D-I recruits playing regularly, and they can play great in stretches, but fizzle out in the regionals when it's all on the line.
          A mark of team-less-ness.

I hope it doesn't sound too harsh, but right now he reminds me of Jermaine Brown....but Justin still has time to change that view.
Tremendous talent, very athletic, but apparently not inclined to think he needs to work with the coach or the team.
I have seen him play six times (once in regular season HS play, twice at the Richwoods Shootout and once in summer ball)
and he always seems to be sending the message
"but coach--watch what I can do, I'm sure you'll appreciate it if I just take the game over myself..."

I have seen the same kind of talk on other boards, and at one point last summer the guys at chicagohoops (Brian Stinnett) even posted a comment on his own board about how he was going to downgrade the kid's ranking because of all the "solo play". Immediately thereafter he dropped Bocot in his rankings all the way from #3 to #40. Now he has Bocot back up at #20, and in his premium text he notes the discipline issue.

Other rankings have Bocot in the top 10, but again, as the Midstatehoops site notes, the kid's talent was never the issue, it always comes back to "poise" and "attitude".. Here is the midstatehoops description:

"Athletic guard with a crafty handle on the ball. Justin can score in a variety of ways and could possibly be the most talented offensive player in his class. However, Bocot needs to show more poise as he has yet to see a shot he doesn't like. With an improved attitude on the floor, Justin has made himself more ready for the collegiate level but needs to add strength to his frame."

I would like to see him come to BU and become a team player, but I feel Jim Les has decided to go another direction in getting Sam Maniscalco and then going after Verdell Jones, D'Mitri Riggs, and Lewis Jackson.

I've speaken with Bocot and a couple of his AAU coaches and currently, he is leaning towards DePaul. Most think he will end up there.

I have yet to hear of Bradley being in the picture. I know he really likes Illinois though it is unlikely that he will end up there. Other interest include Purdue, SIU, and Indiana State.

Many people still hold him accountable for his attitude, but he has ridded that habit. People dwell on the past but they don't realize how much he has changed.

One player at Bloomington who has really improved and upped his stock over the last two months or so is Brandon Dunson. He's has improved his game alot. He's been proving himself to be a high level mid major player at the least. He, like Bocot, has a reputation from the past, of being overrated, but that's the past. He is the real deal now.

His cousin, D'mitri Riggs, is the most talented of all of them but will probably end up at a high level high major school. There's talk of Notre Dame getting close to offering him before the summer is up. I'd expect to see him somewhere like Illinois.

Brandon and D'mitri's uncle, Dana Dunson, was a 3-year varsity starter at Drake in the early 80's.

Look for Daronte Tillman (an incoming freshman). He's about 6'3" 195 lbs, and very, very, very long. He's athletic and strong but needs to hustle harder on the floor. He's avery good kid and will either attend Bloomington or Central Catholic. Look for him to be a high level mid major recruit. He's rated as a top ten incoming freshman by Midstatehoops.com.

The city of Bloomington/Normal has a lot of talent that should come forth pretty soon if coaches don't hold it back.

                    thanks scout,
do you know if Hainlen has gotten any D-I offers?
At 6-5 he is probably too small to play front court at D-I.

Unless Jackson Scott has grown about 4-5 inches since last season, they must be talking about someone else. He was only 6'5" last year.

Hainlen has an offer from Olivet Nazerene (NAIA) but nothing else. He will play a shooting guard in college but needs to become quicker, faster, stronger, and become more aggressive. He'll probably end up at Illinois Wesleyan with his former head coach, Ron Rose.

There's a new Rivals article on Riggs, done by one of the DePaul guys, Nathan Wollack.
It's worth paying the subscrition fee to follow how well Wollock and Ciepierski cover basketball in Illinois and the midwest.

                          one small clip:
"According to his AAU coach, Dodie Dunson, Riggs is attracting attention from Notre Dame, UCLA, Illinois, Michigan State, Michigan, DePaul, Iowa State and Kansas."
