I disagree that it is impossible to come back 100% from an ACL injury, I think the reason most athletes don't return to 100% is that they are rushed back too soon, either by their peers, themselves or their coaches. In WE's case the timing of this is fortuitous in that he will have all of this season and all summer to rehab the knee without feeling the pressure of trying to get back to full form too quickly. 6 mos from now is just May and he will have an additional 5 mos to work his way back into form, gain trust in the surgical repair and re-strengthen the knee completely before trying to compete.

I did find one-- Eric Bradley, a wrestler from Penn State, voluntarily redshirted and then was granted a sixth year of eligibility. That being said he missed most of three seasons to injury, so it was a pretty extreme case.

the NCAA does say each case is granted on an individual, carefully reviewed basis. But for the most part the granting of the 6th year is a way of trying to be fair to kids with injuries and unexpected stuff, and not a rule to be manipulated to the advantage of any given athlete...

PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley sophomore center Will Egolf (Juneau, Alaska/Douglas H.S.), who had earned his first three career starts in the last three games, will miss the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, head coach Jim Les announced today. An MRI exam Sunday afternoon confirmed the injury and Egolf is expected to have season-ending surgery next week.

Egolf sustained the injury Saturday night when he caught a pass on the baseline and began to spin toward the basket with 10:02 remaining in Bradley??™s 82-69 victory against East Tennessee State. Having played in five of Bradley??™s first six games, Egolf is eligible to receive a medical redshirt and retain three full years of eligibility.

In his five games this season, Egolf was averaging 4.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He took over as the starter Tuesday at Florida Gulf Coast and helped the Braves to three consecutive wins. The 6-foot-9 center scored at least six points in each of his three starts, averaging 6.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots in his 19.3 minutes per game as a starter. He played a career-best 20 minutes before sustaining the injury Saturday night, finishing with six points, one rebound, an assist, a blocked shot and a steal.

The Braves (4-2) will have an entire week to prepare for their next game, a Dec. 7 visit to nationally-ranked Michigan State. The 3 p.m. (CST) game at Michigan State??™s Breslin Center will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Very sad to hear about Will Glad to hear that he can receive a medical redshirt for this year. I was sitting in sec. 16 and had a pretty good view of the play and had a strong feeling that it was his ACL, based on how quickly he reacted and went down. I did the same thing to my right knee in college playing ball up in Haussler. I had a pretty good doctor...Dr. Phillips do my surgery and my knee has not shone any negative signs for 16 years!

                Good luck WE!

As a person who has completely shredded their knee... (ACL, MCL, LCL, dislocated patella and meniscus tear) I knew that no good news could come from as fast as he went down, and the way his knee bent, and as much pain as he was in. I hope will the best, and a speedy recovery.... Will, just do not go see Tom Brady's surgeon. We want a quick infection free recovery
