  • A Couple College Basketball Surprises Last Night

    Who'd a thunk this one..

Nothern Illinois loses by 21 at home to Portland State!

DePaul beats a rebuilding Detroit, 71-62, Devin Hill - 2 pts, 10 min.

For SIU Ryan Hare came off the bench for 16 pts on 4-6, and Torres Roundtree played 15 minutes, his first good outing since a knee injury.
This is NOT at all a good loss in any way, shape, or form for SIU!!
This is actually Western Kentucky's FIRST win over a DI opponent.
They had beaten DII Campbellsville, but lost by 9 to Houston and by 28 to Murray State, who just played at Indiana State (and the Sycs stayed within 6!)

Butler plays a BIG TEN opponent at home and only draws 4700?
    Kyle Rowley -- 2 pts.

Indiana played a weak DII, Chaminade, who had been blown out in all their other games.
BUT Chaminade held tough and Indiana escaped with a 2 point win.
Chaminade has only beaten 5 DI opponents in the 25 years they've been hosting this tourney, but they almost got a 6th as the Hoosiers were outrebounded by the Silverswords!
Matt Roth had 3 pts on one made 3-pt FG.
Ton Crean has completely given up on Tijan Jobe, and the 7-footer didn't even play against the DII opponent.
The refs helped IU immensely by sending the Hoosiers to the line 27 times, even though they only made 14.

Brandon Hawkins again does not play for Pacific, so I am sure he's going to redshirt.

I think Portland State isn't all that horrible this year. Btw - the game was in the Great Alaskan Shootout.

also-- the closest thing to a quality win ISU has is beating SMU - and SMU turns right around and loses BIG TIME
to TCU last night, 62-44!!! wow, can you say RPI buster? ISU's opponents' combined record is now 3-14!
BU's opponents have 12 wins combined!!!

Not many surprises in the games so far today, Sunday, 11/30...
except the close one in which Wichita gave Michigan State a close call.

Did you see this at the Wichita game??
The water problem was worse than at Carver...
"The game was delayed 45 minutes by rain from a leaking vent that caused puddles
to form on the floor with just under 13 minutes left in the first half and the Spartans up 9-7."

ISU beats UCSB, but we'll see if it helps their RPI.

Matt Roth was 1-5 in today's IU win over Cornell.
Roth is now 9-25, 36% on the season, as he leads the team in 3-pt attempts per minute played!
ex-Hoosier Randy Wittman's son, Ryan Wittman for Cornell had 28 points.
Walk on Daniel Moore is averaging 24 mpg to Roth's 17 mpg.

Here's a pic of Roth with today's game story on IUHoosiers.com

Georgetown is killing Maryland (who just beat Michigan State)...maybe Michigan State is beatable??

Roth can shoot as far from the bucket better than anyone I have seen when not guarded. If IU gets a couple fast guards/forwards that are bigtime scorers and guys who can penetrate and dish... meaning the defense HAS to focus on the other guys... then Roth will be left alone and wide open for 3's. Which would be true for him no matter where he plays. He could play for IU, UNC, or StMary's-Sisters-for-the-Blind. I don't care what numbers he puts up - it has to do with the guys around him. Roth is not a difference maker - other players make a difference for him to benefit the team.

On the flip-side... his defense has to be adequate to keep him on the floor. Right now, IU is going for broke. Roth will have to work harder every year to maintain his playing time just to keep up with the expectations of a Div1 player.

He could have been a stud for the Braves. He would have been a perfect fit in Les' system and would have been the 3-point threat that the Braves desperately need. Too bad for him, too bad for us

Matt Roth was 1-5 in today's IU win over Cornell....
in the IU game, Verdell Jones was injured. He had a solid collision with a Cornell player (Jeff Foote), fell with his head striking the floor loudly, and lay motionless on the court for a while before being carried off on a stretcher. Later at the hospital the report was encouraging, as they found no serious injuries and Jones was released.
He will be reevaluated but no word on whether he might miss any games.
Verdell is a freshman at IU, from Champaign, IL, and has been playing quite well for the Hoosiers.
                    Hopefully he can bounce back.
